Bengals Host Former Bears And Steelers TE Matt Spaeth

USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Bengals invited their fifth player into Cincinnati for a visit in former Bears and Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth.

According to Joe Reedy with the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Cincinnati Bengals hosted tight end Matt Spaeth on Friday.

Cincinnati currently has two tight ends signed through 2013 in Jermaine Gresham and Orson Charles. Richard Quinn, last year's inactive player of the year, entered free agency as an unrestricted free agent, leaving a need for a third tight end -- and no, we don't identify long snappers as tight ends, despite the team's roster on Bengals.com.

Spaeth, released alongside former Bengals defensive tackle Matt Toeaina by the Chicago Bears on Wednesday, was due a $500,000 roster bonus on Thursday. A former Pittsburgh Steelers third-round pick during the 2007 NFL draft, Spaeth is identified as the league's top tight end run blocker according to Pro Football Focus, though "under-performed as a pass blocker in 2012."

In two seasons and 16 starts with the Bears, Spaeth posted 13 receptions for 78 yards receiving and three touchdowns.

The visit was also reported by Geoff Hobson, who adds that a deal doesn't appear imminent.
