Bengals Expected To Work On Extensions With Major Defensive Players Over The Summer

Paul Frederiksen-US PRESSWIRE

The Cincinnati Bengals are believed to be preparing a summer effort to extend Cincinnati's biggest defensive linemen, who are expected to hit free agency next year.

It's the frustrating response, counter-argument, to why Cincinnati isn't spending like drunken college students during St. Patrick's Day at the nearest adult drinking establishment.

Extensions.

Cincinnati will face a far more difficult song and dance this time of year because Michael Johnson, Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap will enter free agency as unrestricted free agents. Additionally it will be the first time that Cincinnati is allowed to kick off contract negotiations with wide receiver A.J. Green and quarterback Andy Dalton, both of whom will have expiring rookie contracts following the 2014 season.

The Bengals have no intension of waiting.

According to Geoff Hobson with Bengals.com, it's "believed" that Cincinnati will spend their summer trying to sign Johnson, Atkins and Dunlap to long-term extensions, preventing a Dontay Moch-like Migraine from attacking the Bengals front office (and all of us) next year.

It's important that Atkins, Johnson and Dunlap are re-signed. Perhaps the top priority following Andre Smith (and that's only because of the urgency to get Smith signed). The three combined for 30 quarterback sacks, 121 quarterback pressures and 35 additional hits on the opposing quarterback.
