2013 NFL Free Agency: Ed Reed Signs Two-Year Deal With Texans

Evan Habeeb-US PRESSWIRE

The future Hall of Fame safety chose to eschew an opportunity to remain with his Baltimore Ravens. As somewhat expected, he is bolting for the Houston Texans.

The last two seasons, the Houston Texans have been the postseason nemesis of the Cincinnati Bengals. And though the gap between the clubs appears to have lessened with the boring bruiser matchup this past January, that gap may have widened once again.

According to a report from CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, Ed Reed will be joining Houston on a two-year deal (as relayed by our own Jason Garrison via the SB Nation mother site). Reed had narrowed his search down to the Texans and the Ravens and made the difficult decision to move on to Houston. The Texans were reeling after losing safety Glover Quin to the Lions, as well as Connor Barwin to the Eagles. Reed will step in, start at safety and likely finish his career there.

This is just another predicted step taken backwards by the Ravens, as they now have lost eight major players off of last year's Super Bowl roster. Besides Reed, they lost linebackers Paul Kruger, Ray Lewis and Dannell Ellerbe, defensive backs Bernard Pollard and Cary Williams, and offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie in free agency. They also shipped receiver Anquan Boldin off to the 49ers in a trade shortly before free agency began. It's possible that Reed not only saw more dollars in Houston than in Baltimore, but also a bigger opportunity to repeat as a champion, given the teams' respective rosters.
