Week In Review: Cincinnati Bengals Sign Their Backup Quarterback

J. Meric

After patiently waiting for weeks for Cincinnati to sign an external free agent, the Bengals signed Josh Johnson, which promises a quarterback competition in August.

+ BENGALS HAVE THEIR BACKUP: And the lord-ah granted Cincinnati their third quarterback. The Bengals agreed to terms with their first non-Bengals free agent in quarterback Josh Johnson. The agreement is reportedly for two years, which favorably sets up a fun competition for the team's backup quarterback position this year. We figure Johnson, Zac Robinson and probably a rookie quarterback will compete for two spots; the backup and a practice squad spot (which obviously favors a rookie). Predict all you want because March forecasts are worthless in August, but we have our money on Johnson, but let's see what Robinson can do.

Robinson has yet to take a regular season snap, though he's played all but one preseason game during his three years in the NFL.

SEASON GAMES CMP ATT PCT YDS TD INT RATING
2012 4 26 37 70.3 236 0 1 76.0
2011* 4 9 15 60.0 91 1 0 99.6
2010+ 3 6 15 40.0 71 0 0 55.1
11 41 67 61.2 398 1 1 76.6
* with the Lions
+ with the Patriots

After being drafted by the New England Patriots in 2010, he was released during final cuts, signing onto the 53-man roster with the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks that year. Following final cuts in 2011, Robinson signed onto Cincinnati's practice squad where's been since.

What favors Johnson is experience, having played 27 regular season games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns, completing 96 of 177 attempts for 1,042 yards passing.

Our March headline heading into training camp is a battle between experience and youth at backup quarterback, with the unknown variable of the NFL draft (and undrafted free agents).

+ WAIT, A ROOKIE QUARTERBACK?: Alright, we're projecting the idea. It's a good bet that Cincinnati either drafts a late-round quarterback or signs an undrafted free agent following the seventh round; ideally as a developmental player that the team builds at their own pace.
