Hue Jackson, Mike Zimmer Attended LSU Pro Day

USA TODAY Sports

Bengals defensive coaches attended LSU's pro day on Wednesday to watch some high-profile talents.

Bengals assistant coach Hue Jackson and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer both attended LSU's pro day on Wednesday, according to NFL.com's Gil Brandt.

Several big players, including some top-10 talents worked out for scouts and coaches on Wednesday in Louisiana, including defensive end Lavar Edwards, offensive tackle Chris Faulk, running back Michael Ford, defensive tackle Bennie Logan, center P.J. Lonergan, cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, defensive tackle Barkevious Mingo, inside linebacker Kevin Minter, defensive end Sam Montgomery, safety Eric Reid, wide receiver Russell Shepard, running back Tharold Simon, running back Spencer Ware and punter Brad Wing.

The player that the Bengals may be most interested in was Mathieu as they've worked him out once already and they have reportedly scheduled another workout with him in April. Mathieu, also known as Honey Badger, has seen his fair share of trouble off the field and is now seen as a third or fourth round pick, even though he's a first round talent. Though, it wouldn't be necessarily surprising to see him selected in the second round either. We noted on Thursday how Mathieu once again looked fluid in drills and how the talking heads at NFL.com see him being a fit for Cincinnati.

Brandt said that Mathieu looked good in position drills and he's six pounds heavier than he was at the Combine.

Brandt's other notes on some of the other players that worked out include:

  • Edwards looked good in position drills and lost eight pounds since the combine. He ran the 40 in 4.77 seconds.
  • Mingo didn't work out on the bench press but he was "off the charts" in positional drills. He worked out and showed that he's in great shape, but there are concerns still about his strength.
  • Minter ran a 4.67 and looked "steady" in position drills.
  • Reid ran a 4.50 40 and looks to Brandt like an early second-round pick.
  • Shepard ran the 40 in 4.46 and worked out both as a wide receiver and defensive back. Scouts believe he'd be best as a DB in the NFL.

The NFL draft is less than a month away and with as much talent that was at the LSU pro day, it wouldn't be surprising to see one of these players in stripes come the 2013 season.
