Bengals CB Adam Jones Has Become A "More Disciplined" Player

Patrick Smith

Adam Jones is arguably the team's best free agent signing during the offseason so far. But it was more than just talent that convinced the Bengals to keep Jones.

The Cincinnati Bengals signed cornerback Adam Jones to a three-year deal earlier this week, earning $750,000 in 2013 with $1.2 million and $1.35 million during successive seasons. Why the contract? It's more than just talent; it's the application of maturity that Cincinnati feels Jones has finally reached.

Dan Pompei with the National Football Post writes:

The Bengals recently re-invested in Pacman Jones because they believe the cornerback, at 29, finally has turned the maturity corner. Pacman has kept out of trouble off the field for a good amount of time, but what has changed in the last year or so, according to Bengals coaches, is he has become a more disciplined player. He has bought into Mike Zimmer’s defensive system. As a result, Jones might had his best season in memory in 2012.

Jones held opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of 81.9 against targets that Jones covered last year, including a 53.6 percent completion rate. Though he didn't post any interceptions, he defensed seven passes and allowed one completion over 30 yards.

Jones figures to be one of the primary cornerbacks opposite of Leon Hall, either covering wide or in the slot with Dre Kirkpatrick.
