You can say that I have been drinking the "Mike Brown Kool-aide" but I am very happy with how we focused on getting our own guys back in free agency, and leaving room for getting long-term deals with guys like Atkins and Green. That being said, they did leave themselves with some glaring holes that need to be addressed in the draft. So here it is, my 3 round mock:
Round 1: S Kenny Vaccaro/Matt Elam - Safety is the Bengal's most pressing need, and which ever of these guys is there with the 21st pick they need to snatch him. Both can play at the NFL level and would be immediate starters.
Round 2a: RB Giovanni Bernard - Gio is a quick and elusive back that can produce in the passing game as well. He has a low center of gravity which will help him push the pile (in a very aggressive AFC North). He will be a good compliment to BJGE, and has the ability to return kicks.
Round 2b: OLB Zaviar Gooden - Gooden should be available here, and would be a nice pick to add depth and an eventual start within a thin linebacker corp. Even if the Bengals finish a deal with Harrison, he is not young anymore and has been prone to injury the past couple seasons. Gooden will be solid in playing the run, and takes good angles when chasing down runners.
Round 3: OT Reid Fragel - Fragel has flown under the radar in the pre-draft rankings. He is strong athletic player who can stand up against prototypical defensive ends, and has the quickness to get up field and block on outside runs. He has to work on some mechanics as he converted from TE, but will be a steal in the third round and will take some of the sting of losing Smith if it comes to that.
There you have it. Feel free to argue, criticize, or praise my mock draft but it is not a stretch to see this being a very real possibility. It also fills the Bengal's needs and may just put them over the top to being relevant in the post season.
