Looking at the teams ahead of the Bengals, I just have this feeling that the guys they hope will fall to them will be taken just before 21, leaving the Bengals a list of guys that might be a little high or a lesser position of need. As one GM put it, this draft only has 13-15 players with a true 1st round grade. Assuming Andre isn’t signed, the Bengals really only have holes at starting S and RT, the rest are depth picks and future starters.
So do the Bengals trade up? To trade up to 16 with St. Louis they would need to give up a 3rd and a 5th or something similar. To Trade up to 18 with Dallas would require a swap of Bengals pick 37 for Dallas’ pick 47 in the 2nd round or something similar. Trading up is not normal for the Bengals so I doubt they do it, but they could if they feel that those players (Vaccaro or Fluker maybe) are so much better than anything else they can get later. Fluker looks like the only RT who could start day 1, Vaccaro is about the only sure thing as an impact S.
Do the Bengals trade down to get better value? Let’s say the Bengals have not signed Andre and are sitting at 21, Vaccaro and Fluker are gone, they could go S - Cyprien, S - Elam, S - Reid, RB - Bernard, RB - Lacy, OT - Watson, WR -Patterson, DE - Werner, or CB - Trufant. Falcons want to trade up to 21 for picks 30 and a 3rd (92) and 2014 4th, presumably to get Trufant. Between 22-29, 3 teams might draft a S, 2 an OT, 4 a CB, 2 a RB, and all might take a DE or WR. Do you make the trade?
I see the Falcons as the most likely trading partner for the Bengals because they are one of the few that have said they would trade up for the right player, they have a need at CB, and moving from 30 – 21 is within reach without trading away too much.
What do you think? Any other teams that may make good trading partners for the Bengals?
