Time to get excited, Bengaldom!

I know a lot of people got upset that the Bengals didn't take the best defensive player available today in the Draft. I am not one of those people. I'm incredibly excited about our first round pick of Tyler Eifert. It shows a commitment to making the team better as well as a commitment to never getting held hostage in negotiations with a player but I'll get into that later, as I said I'm excited about this pick and, below, I'm gonna give you some reasons why you should be too.

Reason number 1: Depth of the draft, Make no mistake there are plenty of great players to be had in this draft, especially defensive players. This is not an offensive heavy draft like most of the ones we're used to. Example only one QB was taken in the first round and no RBs, the latter being the first time since 1968. Fear not though, cause I bring you good tidings! We can still get Cyprien with the 37th pick and a slew of available RBs with the 53rd. I would even say that you would, under normal circumstances, you would want to take a RB first, but Cyprien is a high level talent to be had in the second round so you need to pick him up if he's there, but for the most part I'm not worried about the defense, which leads me to my next topic....

Reason number 2: In Zimmer, I trust! The defense for all it's "weaknesses" finished 7th overall in YPG, 6th in Passing yards, and 9th in Rushing yards. Oh and they kept the entire corp together and added James Harrison who may apply a much needed chip to the shoulder of the team when it plays Pittsburgh. I think that pretty much says everything needed on that, so back to offense, and more specifically a particular player.

Reason number 3: Jermaine Gresham... I don't know about you but I cringe the first time they throw the ball to him in every game. If he catches it, I can almost be certain he'll go off for 100 yards and a touchdown, but if he drops it we're looking at a 1 catch 17 yards kinda day where he makes one spectacular catch in triple coverage but drops every open ball he has thrown to him. His inability to catch the uncontested pass has always worried me, I thought when he was a rookie he'd mature out of it, but as he matured that stigma followed him. In his defense though he has been to two Pro Bowls, albeit as a reserve, but he's a Pro Bowler none the less. and as some have pointed out this is a contract year for him but I find hope in that particular darkness, which brings me to my final reason...

Number 4: The Patriots. The Patriots have shown us exactly what can be done when you place two high level TEs on the field together on either side. It creates a match-up nightmare, because if forces the linebackers to do something they don't want to do, make a decision. If you load up a formation with 2 WR and 2 pass catching TEs along with a RB and a FB/TE (whichever you prefer) it allows you to disguise what you're doing as an offensive coordinator. Because you can run or pass out of this formation it makes the defense wait for you to snap the ball and then make decisions on the fly to try and control your movement down field, the issue for the defense is this though.... Someone is ALWAYS open! Thereby, making the throw often a simple pitch and catch. Do you see what I'm getting at yet?

Yes, Eifert is going to have his rookie mistakes, he will drop open passes here and there, he will miss a block, and he will have bad games, but in the long run look at how much this opens up our offense. We have a plethora talent! Place our guys on the field and barring injury we may have the best team in the league outside of the Packers and 49ers. That's something a lot of teams can't say. Eventually, though, some of these great players will get away, but here's the other advantage of doing things "the Patriot Way", if you've already got a replacement then you're sitting pretty in a position that you don't HAVE to resign Gresham because you already have an upper echilon TE sitting on your roster. Eifert gives you leverage not only on the playing field but in negotiations, and don't think they don't know that. The front office has been looking to make this the Foxboro of Ohio for a long time and they're finally on their way to doing it. And I, for one, am glad to see it. And lest I forget..... WHO DEY!!!
