Ideally, I'd prefer to see us take Jonathon Cyprien with 2a. and Barrett Jones with 2b. If neither are available at their respective picks however, should we consider Manti Te'o?
I realize most of you will cringe at the thought of selecting Te'o. However, all drama, fake girlfriends, and dismal BCS championship games aside, this guy is highly talented and still considered by many experts to be one of the top players in the draft - yet he has already slipped to the second round, well below his initially predicted top 5 draft pick status.
Not only could he replace Rey in the middle, but he has the potential to be a big-time linebacker and defensive leader with his high IQ. His slow 40-yard dash time of 4.82 is a little concerning, though not necessarily an inhibitor. Physically speaking, he is very similar to James Laurinaitis
(Te'o - 6'2", 255 lb, 4.82 40-yd; Laurinaitis - 6'2", 250 lb, 4.88 40-yd) who has excelled as a MLB.
You also have to imagine this guy will be playing with a chip on his shoulder, hungry to put his past drama behind him by performing on the field. And, he'll come much cheaper as a second round pick along with his embarrassing reputation. He'll probably come with even more loyalty as well to the Bengals
for giving him an opportunity.
My biggest concern was his performance in the BCS championship game. Though you have to take into account, ND's stud NT in front of him was injured, he was up against arguably the greatest offensive line ever in college football, and his inevitable dramatic meltdown was probably weighing on the back of his mind.
Bottom Line: Rey Muauluga still worries me at MLB - or anywhere on the field... and I'm not seeing too many solutions on the horizon beyond hoping a 30 year old Thomas Howard
recovering from an ACL tear can possibly return so Burfict can slide over.
