I'm not gonna lie, I didn't see our pick being made. There I was lying on my couch enjoying a very interesting first half of the draft, when I couldn't do anything to stop myself falling into a deep sleep just before the Saints made their pick at #15, which would have been at around 3:30am my time. Unfortunately, I never woke up until the Vikings went on the clock at #23.
Nevertheless, I was soon informed of the Bengals selection from the NFL Network ticker. When I first saw the pick I was shocked. But the more I've thought about it since last night and today, the more I like it. Eifert was the BPA, it was too early to take a Cyprien or Elam, and also would have been a reach to take any RB. With those positions being our two biggest needs, it made sense to go with the best player on the Bengals' board. While I would also have been satisfied with Xavier Rhodes or Cordarrelle Patterson, Eifert is a really nice addition to our offense. I'm sceptical as to whether Gruden will be able to successfully execute a two-TE set, but we just have to hope that he will. The pick also puts pressure on Gresham to perform in his contract year. Eifert can line up anywhere, and he will help Andy a lot in being a safe option in the middle of the field that Jermaine has struggled to be. AJ, Sanu, Hawk, Gresham, Eifert; damn that is nasty.
Looking ahead at Day 2, I think we're in a great position, in that we can draft for need with both of our picks in Round 2 without reaching, and fill some holes on our roster. Here's who I think we should be looking at with our 2nd Round picks.
#37. S - J.Cyprien. RB - E. Lacy. RB - G. Bernard. LB - A. Brown. DE - C. Carradine. OT - M. Watson
#53. S - DJ Swearinger. RB - J. Franklin. RB - M. Ball. LB - K. Greene. DE - M. Hunt. C- Barrett Jones
If we can address safety and running back in the second round, it's BPA the rest of the way baby!
