I don't know if I have been spoiled by the way the team has drafted the past 3 years because I am not excited at all about this class. I had to turn it off, that's how sick it was making me.
I loved our first 2 picks in EIFERT and BERNARD but after that the selections made me think that MIKE BROWN is back to doing what he is best at and that's reaching for players to early when there is better talent on the board. The BENGALS were at there best when they allowed the draft to come to them and take the best player regardless of needs. It has caused then to have a hole at S for the past couple of seasons but pretty much every where else the team has young talent and depth. It seemed to me this year that the team had set a certain round where they were going to take a S and another round were they were going to take a LB and that reminds me of how MIKE BROWN operates. That way of approaching the draft is what has killed this team in the past.
Like I said I am OK with EIFERT and BERNARD and also the HUNT kid. I would have liked someone else but I can see why the drafted him. The team knows that they are going to have to make a choice between DUNLAP and MJ at the end of this season and HUNT will help ease the sting of losing a very good pass rusher who will probably be MJ. HUNT could be a JJ Watt like player once ZIMMER is done with him. HUNT at 6'8 280 is faster than some of the S we have on this roster.
In round 3 is what left me shaking my head. Yes we need a S badly but you have not reached before for a need so why start now. If you have had success before at doing something...............why stop. ZIMMER and LEWIS can come out and say whatever they want but I believe this is all MIKE BROWN. I really don't have a problem with the player if they liked him, my problem is the value. WILLIAMS would have been there later. I have searched everywhere reading about this kid and no one had his value rated that high. I know that some readers on here did not like what Mike Mayock said about the kid, but he was telling the truth. The kid did not warrant a 3rd rd pick. Mayock is the best in the business at what he does.
I like the PORTER kid, he had a better 2011 season than he had this year and he fits a need at OLB but there were much better players still on the board in round 4 with better upsides. Porter will likely be a ST teams player and maybe get into the 2 deep in year or 2 but when you have players staring you in the face like Marcus Lattimore, Johnathon Franklin and Quinton Patton how do you not take one. Lattimore would have been my pick because this kid had he been healthy would have been a lock for the top 10. BJGE is not the future RB for this team and we all know it. He is simply to slow and has bricks for hands in the passing game. Lattimore or Franklin can be starters down the road. Franklin and BERNARD are very similar but if you take Franklin he is a security blanket in case BERNARD is a bust which I don't feel that he is but we have had horrible luck with past second round picks in the past. The team could have also looked looked at Andre Ellington who might have the best hands out of any RB in this class and these players would have offered great value.
The OT from Kansas Hawkinson is a project and right now is not physical enough to play in the AFC NORTH and will be a practice squad player and the same for the RB and WR we drafted next.
Like I wrote above, I think that I might be spoiled because the BENGALS had hit home runs in the past 3 drafts but this year we could have done better, much much better.
