Dontay Moch "Appears Headed" Back To Defensive End

Joe Robbins

With the Cincinnati Bengals stocked with talent, the team is looking to find roles for players that they want to keep.

It's hard to figure out Dontay Moch. Talented kid with the unluckiest draw in the deck. Constant migraines, foot injuries and a four-game suspension impacted his first two years, casting doubt on whether Moch's NFL career will ever take off. At least in a Bengals uniform. Prior to James Harrison signing with the team several weeks ago, Moch appeared settled for an opportunity against an inexperienced player (Brandon Joiner) and one "bust" (Aaron Maybin) during the NFL draft.

Based on the sheer numbers in personnel, his path to the 53-man roster is bleak, especially at a linebacker position loaded with talent.

Yet if he makes the squad, it may not be at linebacker, per Bengals.com.

So the Bengals now have only three drafted linebackers since Dontay Moch appears headed to play defensive end...

Naturally. However it wouldn't be the first time. During training camp last year, Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer gave Moch snaps at defensive end during nickel packages. After serving a four-game suspension, Moch took part in five defensive snaps against the Cleveland Browns. He was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Illness List (migraines) soon after, ending a promising year that began with 3.5 quarterback sacks during the preseason.

Cincinnati isn't opposed to shifting strong-side linebackers and defensive ends, applying a make-shift 3-4 defense with a linebacker rushing from a two-point stance. They've tried before. Usually failed. Defensive end appears to be an easier path for Moch, but not by much. Already figuring into the position are Carlos Dunlap, Michael Johnson, Robert Geathers, Wallace Gilberry and second-round rookie Margus Hunt.

Moch has a lot to prove and we're not sure if it's already too late.
