Look out Hollywood, there is a new face in town.
After leading his team to a Super Bowl victory, QB Joe Flacco is now taking the obvious next step in his journey by taking his talents to the silver screen, joining the likes of Alex Karras, O.J. Simpson, and the incomparable Merlin Olsen in the hallowed ranks of athletes-turned-acting-powerhouses. According to multiple reports, Flacco will be portraying the on-field likeness of legendary quarterback Johnny Unitas in the upcoming film, "Unitas We Stand."
Joe Unitas, one of the Johnny Unitas' sons, hailed the move, citing Flacco's Baltimore ties and similar personality as the deciding factors in choosing the current Ravens' starter to play Johnny U. in the movie's final scenes.
"Obviously, the Baltimore ties are very important to me," Joe Unitas told the newspaper. "I think it's great that Joe just won the Super Bowl with the Ravens and was Most Valuable Player in the game. A lot of the way Joe plays and his demeanor reminds me a lot of my dad. He's not a rah-rah guy. He throws a touchdown and maybe there's a little fist pump. ... (Flacco) does things the right way and is a good role model for kids and he gets what hard work is and does everything he can for the team. There are a lot of parallels that can be drawn between Joe and my dad."
Not everyone in the Unitas family, however, is thrilled with his inclusion in the project. Unitas' grandson, J.C., took to his Facebook page to express his displeasure, stating, "If you want a real movie, hire a real actor... My grandfather and his legacy deserves only the best, and this is not it."
But the insults didn't stop there. J.C.'s father, John Unitas Jr., also added fuel to the flames.
"If you want a quarterback, go with Peyton Manning," John said. "My father was just like that. This is a joke... The guy's a turd. He never talked to me. He never talked to any of the first five children. He's a guy that's just making money off of my father."
Clearly the situation amongst Unitas family members is prickly, to say the least.
Thankfully, Unitas' legacy is in good hands. Flacco is noted for his charisma and charm, and should have no problem acting in a blockbuster film. Don't believe me? Check out this stunning display of acting prowess.
If that doesn't scream "Oscar lock," then I don't know what does.
