As fans, we'll never know the emotional roller coaster that players go through during the NFL draft. The sweet moment of seeing an area code that belongs to an NFL team, or the quiet internal screams as names are being called while you wait.
Giovani Bernard waited. Nothing on Thursday. A handful of picks into Friday.
Bengals running backs coach Hue Jackson sent Bernard a text, asking how he was doing. Bernard responded with a picture of him and his brother, presumably smiling.
"I sent a text back to him of me and my brother on the coach," Bernard said. "My heart sunk when the phone rang with a Cincinnati area code."
He let it ring a few times before answering it. It was Bengals coach Marvin Lewis letting Bernard know he had become the fifth pick of the second round and 37th overall selection of the 2013 NFL Draft.
"(It) still hasn't sunk in," Bernard said. "I'm still pinching myself. For me right now I'm on a sugar high. I just want to play for the Bengals."
Bernard will take part of next weekend's rookie minicamp.
