Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert was nearly removed from Cincinnati's draft board Thursday night.
According to Joseph Person with the Charlotte Observer, Eifert was "in the discussion for the 14th pick before the Panthers went with (defensive tackle Star) Lotulelei."
Eifert was listed as the top player on Cincinnati's board and despite having a starting two-time Pro Bowler in Jermaine Gresham, the Bengals pulled the trigger regardless.
When asked if it was a surprise that Eifert was there at No. 21, Bengals head coach said:
"I keep saying that (laughs). How can you say when a guy is going to be picked? You can’t. That’s when tight ends are picked. They’re picked around this area most of the time. That’s just where they go. There’s not been many traditionally over the years that go up higher than this area. So I don’t know that surprised is the word."
Lewis was happy about the eventuality.
"Yeah. I started out saying that. He’s a guy that we felt that we would hopefully be considering — one of the guys we’d have an opportunity to be considering."
