Marvin Lewis On Rex Burkhead: Could Be One Of Our Core Guys

USA TODAY Sports

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis likes what he saw out of Rex Burkhead on Friday, saying that will be a guy to uplift special teams and compete as a core guy.

Projecting the team's regular season roster and we've already locked BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard on the 53-man roster with enough confidence that it's not unlike doing a crossword in pen. Cedric Peerman, who signed a two-year deal worth $2.5 million in March, would have to catastrophically collapse to lose his spot. Presuming that the Bengals open the regular season with a four-man running back roster, one remaining position remains open for a projected training camp battle between sixth-round rookie Rex Burkhead, Bernard Scott and Daniel Herron.

And after listening to head coach Marvin Lewis during Friday afternoon's press conference, Burkhead appears favored at this point, saying he's "just what I expected."

"Just the quickness in line, the ability to stick his foot in the ground and go from Point A to Point B," said Lewis following the second practice on Friday. "Just the things you saw from him on tape. His abilities as a receiver. I think he’ll be a guy also who will really uplift us on special teams and compete to be one of our core guys."

Burkhead, labeled as the "Brian Leonard replacement", was selected in the sixth-round of the 2013 NFL draft out of Nebraska.
