Camp Battles: Cornerback Depth

Joe Robbins

There are a few players locked in at cornerback already, but there are a couple spots open for the taking.

The Bengals kept six cornerbacks on the active roster in 2012 and there's no reason to think they'll keep any less or more in 2012. There are a few cornerbacks on the roster that already have their spots locked, barring injury, of course, but the rest of the spots are open season.

Locks:

Leon Hall, Adam Jones, Dre Kirkpatrick, Terence Newman

The Rest:

Terrence Brown:

Brown signed with the team as an undrafted free agent this offseason out of Stanford. He was an honorable mention All-Pac 12 selection and helped Stanford beat USC with seven tackles, one for loss, and an interception.

Brandon Ghee:

Ghee has been on the roster since 2010, when he was a third-round pick. He missed the entire 2012 season with injury and in the previous two years he played in 13 games, making 10 tackles. He's a talented player that many feel has the potential to be a good NFL cornerback, but just hasn't had the chance yet.

Chris Lewis-Harris:

Lewis-Harris is the only guy on this part of the list who was on the active roster in 2012. He was an undrafted rookie in 2012 out of Tennessee-Chattanooga and made two tackles last season.

Onterio McCalebb:

McCalebb was a running back in college that the Bengals decided to move over to cornerback. He's extremely fast and has the potential to break on to the roster, depending on how well he makes the transition from offense to defense.

Shaun Prater:

Prater was a fifth-round pick in 2012 out of Iowa. He was known as a tough run defender while in college but missed his entire rookie season thanks to a knee injury.

Troy Stoudermire:

Stoudermire was an undrafted free agent this year out of Minnesota. He reportedly has great straight-line speed and can play bump-and-run against fast receivers, but needs to work on his ball skills.

--

There are six players on this list that are likely fighting for two roster spots. The two that are selected likely won't get much playing time, but they'll be the first guys called upon if the Bengals are in a tight spot.
