Appearing at the NFL Career Development Symposium, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis took a brief moment to discuss the head coaching prospects of his two in-demand coordinators and also the team's offseason acquisition of former Steelers linebacker James Harrison. Here is a transcript of the short interview, via NFL.com.
Kimberly Jones: What is it like knowing that you have two prime candidates for head coaching jobs, and you could endorse them, but then they'd leave you!
Marvin Lewis: Well I do endorse them and I think that the more quality people you have on your staff it shows an opportunity for others and I want to help promote them every way I can and hopefully we have a great season and we end it being in New York in February and both guys have opportunities to become head coaches.
Kimberly Jones: Well if you do end up in New York in February, my guess is that James Harrison has something to do with it. You plucked him away, the former Steeler, and to add him to your defense and locker room means what?
Marvin Lewis: Well we're really excited for James. I think he still wants an opportunity, he wants to still play at the level he's played at. He came off a knee injury where he missed the first three football games of last year and then he came back and he played virtually every snap. I think having an offseason of training and strength conditioning to get himself back. We're really excited about what he can bring. A guy that's a determined veteran player, he's got a lot of leadership ability, he's played at a very high level, and he comes in and hopefully he'll provide some more one-on-one opportunities for the rest of our defensive front group.
Kimberly Jones: Whether you're dealing with James Harrison or an up-and-coming coach, do you have a piece of advice that you rely on that you can give them to kind of inspire?
Marvin Lewis: Well I think the thing is you have to be yourself each and every day. We all want to communicate, but I think be yourself and we all aspire to be great but we have to be ourselves and really look forward to the challenge each and every day.
