FanPost

Offensive statistics versus top defenses

With everyone's focus on the upcoming 2013 season, I wanted to highlight how our team did versus the best. This fanpost is part one of a two part series on how our team did. Many wonder how much our offense will be improved, but with starters still very much the same from last year, we can see how the foundation of our offense did.

I will be splitting this fanpost into three parts: One where the opposing defence finished top 16 in rushing and the other where the defence is top 16 in passing. The last part will be focused on teams who force turnovers the most. The last section is coming form the notion that it doesn't matter how many yards you give up, as long as you win the turnover battle handedly.

I would have made a post about performances against only top 10 teams, but that would have left me with 3 defences for our quarterbacks and receivers. 3 games (Pittsburgh twice and Philadelphia) is too small of a sample size.

Top 16 defenses account for nearly half of Green-Ellis's games played. It is quite clear from this context that he was not getting it done on the ground (3.3 avg). Green-Ellis's inability to create is evident, as in the second Pittsburgh games, where the defence sends everything to stop him. You would have expected at least one big run to normalize the averages.

Dalton got better from last year against top defenses, but has a long ways to go still. He had one great game (Chiefs), a solid game (Broncos) and a poor game (Eagles) to go along with his atrocious games.
