Breaking down Carlos Dunlap's cap number

Taking a look at Carlos Dunlap's cap number through 2018.

Soon after the Bengals were unable to sign Michael Johnson to an extension, Cincinnati turned to Carlos Dunlap and offered (what we think is) the same offer. He quickly signed. The five-year extension, added onto the contract this year which was set to expire after the 2013 season, keeps Dunlap in Cincinnati through 2018 and is worth $40 million (with $4.5 million through escalators).

How much will that contract impact the Bengals cap number?

According to Joe Reedy with the Cincinnati Enquirer, Carlos Dunlap's cap number is $6.907 million in 2013 but reaches $8.6 million in 2014 -- the highest during any given year.

Part of the contract will award Dunlap $18.7 million by training camp next year (through roster and workout bonuses) with $20 million total paid through 2014.
