Remember our posting about how Donte Whitner is worried about his future in San Francisco not long after the 49ers acquired cornerback Eric Wright from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
Yea, not so much.
According to Albert Breer with the NFL Network and NFL.com, Wright failed his physical with the 49ers, canceling the trade and reverting his rights back to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed the report. Now the Buccaneers are reportedly releasing Wright who will become an unrestricted free agent.
Wright was reportedly arrested for a misdemeanor two weeks ago on a DUI, his second with the team (however, the first was dismissed). If the Buccaneers hadn't found a trading partner before the 49ers agreed to a trade, Tampa Bay would have released the cornerback regardless.
And no. The Cincinnati Bengals are not going to sign Wright, so just stop right now.
With Leon Hall, Terence Newman, Adam Jones, and even Dre Kirkpatrick, Wright would essentially be a fifth cornerback. Unless there's an injury, or Kirkpatrick's rehabilitation takes a step back, there's no need for a better version of Jason Allen.
