Bengals offensive tackle Andre Smith showed up on the team's Active/Non-Football Injury list (which is another version of the Physically Unable to Perform list with technicalities being applied to financial concerns). All that was known is that he suffered a calf injury, which caused a slight meltdown among fans anticipating the worst news for a player that's rarely offered optimism.
Smith spoke to reporters following Thursday's practice to answer various questions, with only one being the most interesting. With a little rest on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Smith is anticipating that he'll be ready to go by Sunday. However, Smith deflected questions about the personal issues that head coach Marvin Lewis referred to during the offseason workout program that Smith was absent from.
Though players on injury lists during training camp and the preseason count against the 53-man roster, there's nothing preventing a player from practicing whenever he's ready. Reserve/PUP, which prevents players from playing for the first six weeks into the regular season, won't be applied until after the preseason.
