Making sense of the current logjam at our LB corp and D-line

These are really more questions I am posing as I'm struggling to understand the decision making process that led to the overload of linebackers and defensive linemen we currently have. And I'm leaving the resigning of Maualuga out of this....

Pat Sims and the drafting of Still & Thompson - For the life of me, I still don't understand why we drafted Still AND Thompson within the first three rounds last year - especially when we had Pat Sims. Granted, he's had a bad history of injuries, but nothing chronic. This obviously led to his departure as a proven run-stopper, who we could have easily afforded at $1.5M, for two rookies we're still not entirely sure about. I'm wondering why our current DT situation isn't Atkins, Peko, and Sims with Gilberry used as a pass-rushing interior lineman. This would open up another DE spot for perhaps Moch. As it was, Still and Thompson struggled for playing time after Sims who came on strong in the second half of the season. If the reason for drafting Still/Thompson was insurance, then why not just draft Thompson (or another large DT in a later round) and sit him on the practice squad? I'd rather have used those second and third round picks for Still/Thompson on other positions (perhaps SS, LG, and/or RB).

Moch at DE - As talented as this guy is with the occasional flashes of extreme ability he's shown during various preseason games along with the fact he is no longer eligible for the practice squad, why is he currently being forced into the role of odd man out at a position he is significantly undersized for? I simply don't see MJ, Dunlap, Geathers, Gilberry, or Hunt not making the active roster. And there's no way we'll keep 6 DEs. So it seems Moch is being forced down the plank for another team to quickly scoop up. Why not have him compete at LB?

Why are so many LBs competing here instead of going elsewhere? - Burfict, Maualuga, Harrison, Lamur, Campbell, DiManche, Joiner, Maybin, Porter, Rey, Schaeffer, & Taylor add up to 12 (13 if you were to count Moch) players battling for maybe 6 spots. I just don't get it. Especially when we used the nickel package during 50% of the defensive plays last year and are expected to do so again. Why have the Bengals brought in so many LBs and how have they been able to convince them all that they've got a decent shot on the roster? For example....

Bengals offering DiManche "Way more" money than Jacksonville - As reported, we apparently offered way more money than Jacksonville in the pursuit of UDFA DiManche. Yet as it currently stands, he seemingly will be one more practice squad player if lucky.

Drafting Porter and picking up Maybin - Again, there's got to be a reason why the Bengals are interested in and able to entice all these LBs to come to Cincinnati, but why and how? I can maybe understand the UDFAs coming, but we used a 4th round pick on Porter and somehow convinced a solid veteran in Maybin to compete - at the potential expense of other talented young LBs the Bengals have committed time to and seem to have confidence in.
