There's nothing terribly special about it. Every year players sit for a practice or two during training camp to work out soreness and various ailments that they'd otherwise (and easily) work through during the regular season. Players are conditioning to play football during training camp for the first time since last season, which isn't the same as working out on your own during the offseason. These are expected to happen and a day or two of rest usually clears out those issues. However, there are some mounting injuries that are forcing, or will force, sustained absences from practices. Let's take a look at the team's infirmary list.
Larry Black: Season ended when he was carted off the field with a dislocated ankle. Black is a prospect that the Bengals like and will return next season. He's the first major casualty of the season.
Carlos Dunlap: Suffered a mild concussion late during Monday's practice and told head coach Marvin Lewis that he didn't feel well after practice. The team is applying NFL protocols and his return is currently unknown.
Brandon Thompson: Suffered a knee sprain on Sunday and hasn't practiced since. Unlikely to go against the Falcons next week and may miss the second preseason game in Tennessee as he's expected out for a week or two.
A.J. Green: A knee bruise during the team's first practice on Thursday has kept him on the sidelines since. It's believed that his return will be at some point after the team's preseason opener in Atlanta. Don't expect him to play the Falcons a week from Thursday.
Andrew Whitworth: Sat for a third straight practice on Wednesday but he's telling the local media that this was part of the plan, "to gauge how much he can tolerate." Whitworth will not play against the Atlanta Falcons.
Clint Boling: Missed practice on Sunday and Monday with an ankle and hamstring, but did some work on individual drills on Wednesday. He's expected to return Thursday night.
Leon Hall: Sat out during Wednesday with a "some sort of illness" and that Hall is expected back for the first Family Night practice on Thursday.
Giovani Bernard: Despite wearing his uniform and pads, Bernard is dealing with a sore hamstring. He did some work on special teams catching the football, but didn't take part in 11-on-11 drills.
Alex Smith: Perhaps one of the more quieter tight ends on this side of Richard Quinn, Smith sat on Wednesday with a sore knee.
Tyrone Goard: Suffered a concussion on Sunday when he made his training camp debut off the Physically Unable to Perform List.
Active/PUP: Chris Pressley, Zac Robinson, Bernard Scott
Active/NFI: Cedric Peerman
