Cincinnati Bengals Saturday Practice Recap

David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

The Bengals resumed practice on Saturday after taking the day off on Friday.

Coming off the team's preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons, the Bengals gathered on the practice field during Saturday's session wearing helmets and shorts. The team opened with an 11-on-11 session with Andy Dalton completing short passes into the flats and Josh Johnson maintaining his role as the second-team quarterback. Wide receiver Marvin Jones made his return, posting a reception during the opening 11-on-11 round.

A handful of players sat on Saturday. A.J. Green, Andrew Whitworth and a host of players out with injuries that will take some time to recover remain sidelined. Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick rode the exercise bike and Michael Johnson received a veteran rest day. Brandon Ghee is still dealing with concussions issues and undergoing protocols.

Linebacker J.K. Schaffer got some work with the first-team defense, even vocally adjusting the defense based on a Josh Johnson audible.

Maualuga was still taking snaps at middle linebacker as well, but eventually Vontaze Burfict rotatated into that role.

In other news...

Cobi Hamilton had a bad drop during 11-on-11 session, losing the football on a route in which he was wide open. The football bounced off his body without a defensive soul around. What's more alarming? Hamilton missed it? Or that he was wide open?

But he wasn't the only one. According to accounts at practice, Dane Sanzenbacher, Mohamed Sanu, and Brandon Tate had their share of drops. Yet it didn't help that Josh Johnson's accuracy was a little off either.

Reds great Joe Morgan joined the practice festivities as a guest of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

Not Joe Morgan.

Our own Andrew Miller captured some of the drills on Saturday.

Practicing punt blocks.

Reception by Sanu, with fantastic field position by our own Andrew Miller.

Great reception by Sanzenbacher, grabbed by Brennen Warner.
