How does this offense look like a veritable powerhouse in the making against a tough Chicago Bears defense in week 1, then fold under the weight of itself against two weeks in a row? When playing Green Bay, for a brief portion we were inept as inept gets. Letting 30 points go unanswered is not what winning teams do and we should remind ourselves, we won because the defense went out and made the right plays at the right time. Had that fumble not become a touchdown, we may be sitting at 1-3 right now. The defense is doing all it can, time for our O to take it up a level. Now, this is not a post to bash a player or coordinator. We can win and no one has to lose a job, but things need to make a change. Attitudes and philosophies across the line need fixed.
Starting with the o-line. When this offense gets rolling, it is because we are like a hammer swung full force across the face of the opposing front seven. Cleveland may have a new alignment and some new personnel, but this is the same Bengals line that was a top-five unit last year. This was a line that we said "Wait and see when Gio gets in there and can take those holes for some serious yardage." This line needs to be the crux of our offense. As of now, this line looks like it just wants to survive a game. I don't care if you are a backup tackle, a backup guard, or even a starting center it's time to step up when you get on the field. It's time to leave a mark on the man in front of you, and it's time to reach out and touch some linebackers too. Behind the line is our territory and the same goes for the field ahead.
It's time we got the tight ends in there too. Where is Orson Charles? Where is Alex Smith? Where are those bunch power formations that can not only tote the rock, but can cause chaos in coverage? I wanna see some trickery and some power from guys not named Jermaine Gresham. Eifert hasn't done enough for me yet honestly. He's gotta make some plays no one else can. He's gotta get his head on straight, because we're here to make him a star. Sure his versatility is nice, but stop getting too cute and let the man be how we drafted, a DOMINANT TIGHT END. As for the rest of them, Alex has been useful in relief, but needs to make some waves of his own. I want to see that defensive end sealed tighter, I wanna see some alleyways on the outside. And Orson, get on the field man! Peko is taking your job, a job you still need to get out and earn btw after sending the Terminator out the door. I know you're a project, but its time to get Project Charles active. I was so hyped in the offseason of the wrinkles you could add to this team. You might be learning, but you don't get to stay unless you have talent. Make an opportunity to use that talent. I don't care if you're stuck as a special teams grunt, just prep like the next game is the biggest of your career. Apply yourself in games, and it just might be.
In addition to the misuse of our tight end brigade, we've gotta see Sanu do what Sanu does. He's what you get when you cross Baby Hawk with a armored Humvee. He's not Victor Cruz, nor is he Slim, but Sanu needs to be a weapon in this offense a lot more. This is the guy to give a crossing route to, this is the guy to put out on a quick screen and make some poor DB pay with a stiff arm. He needs to be our multi-tool out of the slot.
As far as I can tell, we need an attitude adjustment. We don't become an effective offense until we stop trying to be cute with the deep ball and get the right guys in the right situation. Because if we aren't the Hammer out there, we're looking at a lot of headaches from our offense.
