There are three players going into this off season that the Bengals have to decide what they want to do with the contracts heading into the 2014 season. I was wondering which one the fans would prefer?
1. Michael Johnson DE:
After having a career year last season many expected MJ93 to come into his contract year with a chip on his shoulder to show the Bengals they made a mistake not offering him a larger contract. He sorta did but at the same time he didnt. If you compare just sacks from this year to last the results arent even comparable. While the loss of his big man in the middle will for sure affect that number, but to be one of the top paid defensive ends in the league he should have been able to prevail through that.
Now on the other hand one would say pay the man, he was ranked as a top five defensive end according to PFF and seemed to be in on every tackle almost. If a running back was stopped at the line it was almost always Johnson and Burfict getting credit for the tackle.
2. Anthony Collins:
If one had said at the beginning of the year one player would start out on the bench and halfway through the year would have to start due to injury and by the end of the season he would be demanding starting money. I would guarantee no one, myself included would have said Anthony Collins. While he did come in and play solid football, also would refuse to give up a sack all year, Collins solidified himself as a starting tackle in this league deserving of starting tackle money. Weather or not the Bengals decide to give it to him is the million dollar question. Right now Brown has two bookends making top 15 money out of all tackles, so would he really want to make it three?
3. Jermaine Gresham:
Let me start saying no, Gresham is not a free agent this year but hear me out. The reason I think the Bengals need to decide on him this off season is because if you have seem Gresh play the last three years you would know that he heads into every new season with sky high expectations with a huge let down every year. Weather it be the penalties, the fumbles or Gresham being Gresham, he never seems to fill the hype he once had coming out of Oklahoma. So with this year being his contract year why not trade him? There are alot of teams willing to trade picks for a big tight end who can run, so why not cash out while you can rather then watching another season of him being a letdown and hoping he transforms into another Tony G? Trade him, let the future take over ( Tyler Eifert) and cut the losses before it bleeds out.
