Backup QB

If we had Dalton and no Green would we have made the playoffs?? What is the key of Dalton's success so far, is it the team built around him or did he lead us to the playoffs these past 3 years?

I truly believe that it is the talent around Dalton that got us to the playoffs, along with one of the best defenses in the NFL. I'm not saying Dalton didn't contribute, but how many QB's wouldn't look like stars on this team. We probably have more offensive weapons than any team in the AFC. The 49ers are the only team in the NFL that I honestly think might have a deeper team than us offensively. Three years in, Dalton still throws airy rainbow balls that continuously get picked off, he still hasn't improved the deep ball, and accuracy isn't quite there. He fails to be consistent, to be a leader and his decision making is highly questionable.

Going into offseason you can't help but explore different possibilities. If Lewis admits it or not, if we had more options or an early pick Dalton would not be our guy. With that being said I believe that we should look at back ups with the mindset that they will eventually become the starter.

Terrell Pryor is a good player in a bad situation. Being on one of the worst offenses and worst managed teams in the NFL. He most likely will be looking at free agency this year. A part of his game that goes unnoticed is his ability to open up the run game, while it boosts up rushing yards, it also makes offensive drives take longer. When the offensive drives take longer it keeps the defense off the field keeping them rested for as long as possible. He has proven to be a capable passer that also possesses the talent to use his legs, with a 4.38 40 time. A young player with a lot of potential in a situation you can say is the opposite of Dalton's. If signed he wouldn't have to come in as the starter but hopefully would progress to that.
