Marvin Lewis considered George Edwards for Defensive Coordinator post

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis considered hiring Miami Dolphins linebackers coach George Edwards for the post of defensive coordinator.

It was a foregone conclusion that Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis was going to promote linebackers coach Paul Guenther to the vacated defensive coordinator position. It made the most sense -- Guenther coached under former defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer for six seasons and began developing his own reputation with the work that he put in with linebacker Vontaze Burfict.

However, there was another candidate.

According to John Wooten, chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, Lewis also considered Miami Dolphins linebackers coach George Edwards for the position. Lewis and Edwards worked together in Washington in 2002 when Lewis was the Redskins defensive coordinator and Edwards held the title of assistant defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Chris Tomasson with the Pioneer Press wrote:

Wooten said Lewis was considering hiring Edwards to replace Zimmer, who had been the Bengals' defensive coordinator. Lewis ended up promoting linebackers coach Paul Guenther.

We assume that the consideration was as an alternative in case Guenther followed Zimmer to Minnesota or Jay Gruden in Washington.

In the end, Edwards stayed within that Lewis/Zimmer/Gruden trio. Fox Sports broke the story on Thursday that Edwards was hired to become Zimmer's defensive coordinator in Minnesota.
