Why The Bengals will draft David Fales in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

San Jose State Quarterback David Fales will be drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round.

This is a bold statement, I know. Here's why it happens.

I just want to get this off of my chest. I am not impressed by Andy Dalton. But like him or not, it doesn't matter because we are not cutting his paychecks. Mike Brown is. And he's not going anywhere in 2014 except back to practice.

However, this does not mean we should not get quality backups, because frankly, our QB group could cripple us fast. Dalton DID have a solid year in 2013. Who can say other? But to me, 2013 was Andy's year to shine, and he didn't. I'm not going to say it's all his fault, and he should be dropped because he sucks. Actually no. He performs well enough most of the time and is getting better each year. There is simply no other option for us next season at the QB position that isn't loaded with question marks.

No. Dalton will not be replaced in 2014. Unless he gets hurt. And that is the main reason for us to draft a capable backup. A player to groom, develop, prepare. Because no matter what anyone thinks of Dalton, he's THE GUY.

Therefore, we should draft someone to be his backup. This candidate needs to not only be able to come in and play as needed in case of an emergency situation, but this person needs to provide us with an alternative to Dalton. Getting hurt is one thing, but what if we can't come to a reasonable agreement with Dalton and he wants Flacco $$$? I do not think Mike Brown will pay it. I think Mike Brown will tag his ass.

Enter David Fales. Why him? Well, I think he's got several things working in his favor. He's a very solid QB. He's likely to fall to the 2nd round (like Dalton), and he's coachable and could be pretty damn good in the NFL. He isn't the scrambler QB, which means he relies on his arm and brain, which fits into the WCO we are going to continue with. He can work well with the running game, but can still bang out the big throws and tight shots.

You'll see. He's going to make Mike Brown fall in love with him. Marvin and Hue can live with that. Dalton gets some actual competition, but enough to push him into having a great year in 2014 and if we need him. Fales could be ready to step in and do the job. We won't reach for him, but if he falls to us in the second round, we are going to get him.
