Gruden or Dalton...you tell me!

So my buddy and I have been having numerous lengthy discussions about Andy Dalton, and the future of the Bengals. While everyone knows that this is a make or break year for Dalton specifically, and for the Bengals in general, we've been discussing whether Dalton will improve, hold steady, or regress in a new system.

It was during this last part, where we had some debate. We started with a comparison between Demayrius Thomas and AJ Green. I stated that DT is everything I wished AJ would be - physical, strong, demanding, and always running his route hard. We both noticed that AJ often seems disinterested on some of his routes, and we concluded those are plays that AJ isn't the primary read, and he knew the ball would most likely not head his way. Here's where the conversation led, and where I want your opinion.

We were trying to figure out if AJ sometimes loses interest because he knows Andy is incapable of getting through his progressions (and AJ isn't his primary), or if it was Gruden's system that expected Andy to not get through his progressions and get the ball out to his primary (which we know was an important part to the offense). We weren't able to agree at all, other than agreeing that this will be the year that answers that question.

So I ask you...was it Gruden's system, Dalton's limitations, or a combination that led to times like I described???
