This is essentially the worst time of the year for me. After Sunday, there's no football for 6 months. Six. Freaking. Months. And truth be told, while I would prefer it if the Broncos won this Sunday, either way would be fine with me. After the game, it's time to transition to free agency.
For both the Steelers and the Bengals, free agency is fun to talk about but tends to bear zero fruit. Apart from a few re-signings, neither team can be counted on to add contributors via free agency. Therefore, free agency for me is simply a time to shake my head and laugh at teams that drop huge money on guys that won't end up helping them win championships. There's some definite fun in that, but you can only enjoy the Redskins undoubtedly dropping 50 million on a flashy player so much.
Next is the draft. That's a different story from free agency entirely, because the draft is awesome. The mocks, the gamesmanship, the potential for movement up or down each round, and the fact that you can pick out the biggest draft bust by simply watching who the Browns pick the in the first round. There's no better NFL time than draft weekend, which flows directly into rookie mini-camp and unrealistic expectations. Before long, that leads to mini-camp, training camp, and preseason.
But for now, this time of year just sucks. The draft has been pushed back later than ever, free agency promises to be unremarkable, and there's nothing to cheer for but arrests on opposing teams.
Bring on the draft.
