In perusing various stats, I happened across an interesting one.
I've mentioned a couple times that Dalton doesn't play well when he is asked to pass more than 50 times in a game. Actually, the real number is 40 times per game.
In the 5 regular season losses, he threw more than 40 times in 4 of them. The only one in which he threw less than that was the game against Chicago, and even the most ardent Dalton basher will admit that loss wasn't really on him.
That could be a fluke, so lets look at the 11 wins this season. How many times did he throw 40+ times in a game they won? Only twice (first Pittsburgh game and the Buffalo game). he threw less than 40 times in all of the other 9 wins.
Is it a pattern? Let's look a little deeper, across his entire career.
In the 6 regular season games they lost, he threw more than 40 times in 3 of them. In the 10 games they won, he threw more than 40 times only once.
In the 7 regular season games they lost, he threw more than 40 times in 3 of them. In the 9 games they won, he did not throw more than 40 times at all.
In 2 out of 3 of his postseason losses, he threw more than 50 times (51 this year, 53 in 2011).
The 30 total games they've won since then? He threw more than 40 times in only THREE of them.
STOP MAKING ANDY THROW 40+ TIMES IN A GAME!!
Andy has thrown more than 40 times in a game only 15 times in his career. They lost 12 out of those 15 times.
He's thrown fewer than 40 times 36 times in his career.....and won 27.
In over-40 pass games they lose 80% of the time.
In under-40 pass games they win 75% of the time.
Both statistically and in win/loss ratios his best games come when he throws 28-33 times, so it's not like he should never throw the ball. He just shouldn't be made to throw it more than 40 times or they're likely going to lose.
