NCAA tourney filled with local teams, again

The 4 teams who are traditionally the top 4 in Ohio again reached the NCAA tourney, with the Ohio State (6), UC (4), Xavier (12), and Dayton (11) all reaching the tourney.

Two more almost made it, with Toledo falling in the MAC title game, and Wright State falling in the Horizon championship.

And local to Cincy, but outside of Ohio, traditional powers UK and L’ville both made the tournament again.

Taking a look at the Ohio teams:

U of Cinci
RPI 21
Vs top 30 ... 2-4
Vs top 50 ... 6-5
Vs 50+ ... 21-1
Best win ... @L’ville 69-66
Worst loss ... @Southern Methodist 55-76
Last 10 ... 6-4
Road & Neutral sites ... 9-5
The scouting report on UC is rather simple – Sean Kilpatrick. At one time they were 22-2 (11-0), but since then have gone 5-4. They have NO bad losses, with their worst being on the road to an RPI 53 team.

Xavier Univ
RPI 47
Vs top 30 ... 2-4
Vs top 50 ... 4-6
Vs 50+ ... 16-6
Best win ... Home v. Creighton 75-69
Worst loss ... v. U So Cal 78-84
Last 10 ... 5-5
Road & Neutral sites ... 6-10
Semaj Christon & the Musketeers have 2 signature wins (Creighton & UC), but were losers in 3 of their last 4, and own some bad losses (2x Seton Hall, USC). They barely squeaked into the tourney, needing to start in the "play-in", round 1 game. Xavier has traditionally held their own in Dayton (vs the Flyers). It will be interesting to see how they fare in the play-in game in Dayton with a local anti-Xavier crowd rooting against them.

the Ohio State
RPI 24
Vs top 30 ... 2-3
Vs top 50 ... 6-5
Vs 50+ ... 19-4
Best win ... @ Wisc 59-58
Worst loss ... home v. Penn St 70-71
Last 10 ... 6-4
Road & Neutral sites ... 8-6
Ohio State took advantage of an easy schedule early, racing out to a 15-0 record. But have gone 10-9 since then. Have beaten Wisc & Mich St, but lost to teams like Penn St & IU. Ohio State has doggedly avoided playing in-state opponent UD in the regular season. It will be interesting to see how they fare, now that they can no longer avoid the Flyers.

Univ of Dayton
RPI 43
Vs top 30 ... 4-3
Vs top 50 ... 4-6
Vs 50+ ... 19-4
Best win ... v. Gonzaga 84-79
Worst loss ... home v. U So Cal 76-79
Last 10 ... 8-2
Road & Neutral sites ... 10-6
Dayton started the season well at 12-3, and coming 1 point from facing Syracuse in the Maui championship. But had an awful 1-5 stretch in January. Since then, they have gone 10-2 (beating some good RPI teams such as UMass, G Wash & St Louis).

Clearly the Cincy Jungle folks are likely to favor UC or X (the local teams) or OSU (the big name). But one thing I’ll say for the Dayton Flyers – they are the only team of the 4 who have been hot down the stretch, winning 10 of 12. And they are the only team with a winning record vs top 30 RPI teams.
