Maurice Jones-Drew visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers

Le'Veon Bell could have a new RB partner if MJD signs with the Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had shown interest in Green Bay Packers running back James Starks as a change of pace running back to Le’Veon Bell, but Starks eventually re-signed with Green Bay.

Now, they may be moving on to a better back who would be a little costlier. Maurice Jones-Drew has been among the top 5 RBs in the NFL for much of his career, but he lost a step in 2013.

The led the Jacksonville Jaguars to agree to terms on a three-year contract with RB Toby Gerhart. That all but guarantees will be playing for a new team in 2014, and the Steelers may be that team:

Jones-Drew struggled last season, averaging a career-low 3.4 yards per attempt with the Jaguars. The Steelers would sign him to be a backup to Le'Veon Bell, but this still would be a dangerous 1-2 combo.

One other team showing "serious interest" in Jones-Drew is the New York Jetsreports Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. The Jets could also use a guy like MJD with a backfield that was in flux for most of the 2013 season.
