I loved our draft last year. Really, the only player I felt we NEEDED was a speed back, and I thought any of our picks in the first three rounds could yield that dynamic change of pace guy of which our offense was thirsting. Until Smith resigned I approached the draft with apprehension. Offensive tackle, safety, linebacker were all needs that I felt had to be addressed, but when the smith deal was announced, I felt much more at ease. " Zimmer will figure out the secondary and the linebacker cores" I said, " the trenches are set". It was a draft that every fan wants to have, waiting for playmakers that can only make us better.
Eifert, then Gio! It was great!
i don't think we are in the same position this year. I feel apprehension. The o-line was better with Collins in last year, Cook is gone (good move I think, but is Pollack dependable), and we have lost depth and gained age at key positions. Zimmer isn't there anymore, so I can't trust that the defense will be solid regardless of personnel. I hope hall comes back healthy, Newman is getting to be too far past his prime to lock down anyone, jones is a wild card (could be in the pro bowl, or jail at the end of next season.....and I'm a mountaineer, so it hurts to say that). Atkins is recovering from major injury, Johnson is gone. And the strong safety position still wasn't a big help last year. So there are some serious questions I think.
Corner has to be addressed right? O-line has to be addressed right? Rush end? Outside linebacker? Safety? I wish we could sit back and pull the trigger on BPA no matter the position, but I just don't think we improve unless we draft o-line and corner in the first three rounds. Who thinks differently? Give me some positivity going into the draft, so I can get excited again.
