I'm reading all this stuff about safeties visiting Cincy, and I can't help thinking we made a big mistake with Williams. I mean I'm all for drafting Pryor as an impact player in the 1st round over a need like CB or OT (similar to if we draft Shazier, Mosley or Donald in the 1st even though we don't need LBs or DTs). But players like Bailey or Vereen? I mean let's look at the facts:
1. Nelson is more than solid and has 2 years left of his contract, so there's no need to replace him.
2. Iloka had a terrific year, is seen by some journalists as an NFL player to watch in 2014, and still has major upside - so I assume we're not looking to replace him.
3. We signed Danieal Manning for more than just camp fodder - and we know our new DBs coach from Houston loves him so he isn't going anywhere.
4. I can't see us having 5 safeties on the roster, so if we draft a new S then clearly Williams is the odd one out.
I remember being gutted with both the Williams and Hawkinson picks last year because I thought they were major reaches, but then I thought: trust the coaches, they know what they're doing.
So here I was looking forward to seeing a big 2nd year from Shawn when suddenly I see all these S visits prior to the draft.... Did the coaches just get it wrong and now realise they made a big blunder?
I'll be upset if they did. That was a 3rd round pick, not a 6th or 7th - should we really be throwing away picks like that?
Or is there another explanation? What do you think?
