The way I see it, this is a very real question this coming training camp. He has shown very little by way of rushing the passer, which he was drafted for. The Bengals staff seems to be preparing to separate from him if he doesn't show marked improvement soon and we all saw the comments made by the staff to Still during Hard Knocks last year. I don't want the team to get into the habit of moving on from third year guys often but I doubt this will ever be a real concern. But with guys like Hunt and Gilberry showing an ability to play DT during passing situations as well as Guenther's comments following Will Clarke's selection this year, when he talked about his ability to "be 290 in a month," the battle this coming off season may be between several DEs and Devon Still. Robert Geathers (who I assume is a real candidate to be cut, strange as that seems, if the team needs his money to resign Burfict and possibly Dalton), Devon Still, Dontay Moch, Sam Montgomery all could be fighting for the same spot. Geathers' real contribution could be mentoring all these pass rushers on how to stop the run effectively. Further complicating the situation could be if the team wants to get Jayson DiManche on the field more often. He earned it last year with his ST play and had great ability as a pass rushing DE in college. He showed improvement as a LB last year marked clearly by earning his spot on the roster. WIth the return of both Emmanuel Lamur, who many of us were excited for, and Sean Porter, the linebacker situation gets complicated itself. It'll be a fun training camp to watch and see which players come out on top. The team seems to be giving itself the option if guys with ability like Moch, who finally stayed healthy last year for the Cardinals, and Montgomery, who clearly had ability but was out of shape and the Texans felt not worth the trouble, can show up. I don't dismiss Montgomery as quickly as some others because the Bengals love these reclamation projects and a guy with third round ability isn't anything to sneeze at. I'm interested to see where the Bengals go from here with all these guys who could be valuable in many roles.
