Dalton. Bengals. Contract. What Dalton should get paid.

First off, people need to stop comparing Dalton’s new deal to Alex Smith’s deal.

Smith signed his $9M deal in 2012 after San Fran drafted his replacement (Kaep) the year before.

Smith’s contract is a contract for a top-end backup... not for a starter

Andy Dalton is not going to sign for a backup’s contract!

Dalton compares with Cutler, Romo & Stafford on the field, and so will his contract.

Neither Romo, Cutler, nor Stafford are known for success, especially in the post-season.

Yet they are all making $18M per season, which is the going rate for an above average QB starter.

Dalton will be due the same – either here or elsewhere.

If we pay Dalton now, we can probably get him in the $15M~$18M range

If he has another good season without playoff success, it will still cost $15M~$18M to re-sign him.

If he has a good seasons and follows that up with playoff success, it will likely cost over $20M to re-sign him.

At the end of this season, his price can only go up – it won’t go down. So pay him now, or wait to pay him more later.
