NFL Trade Rumors: Brandon Flowers on the block

Rob Carr

A report is out that the Chiefs "are believed to be willing to deal" cornerback Brandon Flowers. The Bengals do need a cornerback...

The Kansas City Chiefs need to draft a cornerback early in this year's NFL Draft, but they ironically may also be wiling to trade away their best corner.

Brandon Flowers used to be a Pro Bowl-caliber corner for the Chiefs, but he didn't transition well into new defensive coordinator Bob Sutton's press-heavy scheme, and he got burned in press coverage frequently while allowing quarterbacks to compile a 103.9 passer rating against him in 13 starts.

Dan Pompei of Bleacher Report now reports the Chiefs willing to deal Flowers ahead of the draft:

The Chiefs are believed to be willing to deal Brandon Flowers in an attempt to acquire extra draft selections. The corner made the Pro Bowl in 2013 even though he did not have his best season. Pro scouts consider him a tough, scrappy player who is an above-average cover man. Flowers' contract could make a trade difficult.

He is due to earn $5.25 million in base salary this year, and at this point of the offseason, not many teams have the type of cap flexibility to acquire a player with that big a number.

Flowers has three years left on a six-year, $49.35 million deal, so it may be out of the question for a team like the Cincinnati Bengals to acquire him, though they still have enough cap space to take on his contract and sign all of their draft picks.
