Trey Hopkins doing well with Bengals' first-team offense

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Bengals are good for getting at least one undrafted player onto their 53-man roster nearly every year under Marvin Lewis. Texas Longhorns offensive guard Trey Hopkins is one to watch for this summer as he looks to win a roster spot along a talented but thin o-line.

With Mike Pollak battling a knee injury and Clint Boling being out most of training camp while rehabbing from ACL surgery, Hopkins has been getting some run with the first-team offense in OTAs.

Trey Hopkins of Texas, one of the four or so undrafted rookies that have a shot at making the roster, took his turn at starting left guard with the No.1 s Thursday and continued to flash a nice brand of athleticism. With Clint Boling rehabbing an ACL, Tanner Hawkinson and Andrew Whitworth have worked in there at left guard at times and the 6-3, 307-pound Hopkins, believed to have signed the Bengals’ biggest rookie free-agent deal, got his shot next to Whitworth.

Hopkins was viewed as the 26th-best offensive guard, per CBS Sports, while ESPN ranked him as the 17th-best guard. He played 50 games at Texas, with 42 starts (28 at left guard, 14 at right tackle). He was an All-Big 12 selection twice and earned first-team honors in 2012.

As of now, Dan France and Kevin Zeitler are the only other healthy 'pure' guards, but second-year lineman Tanner Hawkinson has gotten some run at guard and tackle with the starters in OTAs. It's unclear as to whether the Bengals prefer Hawkison at tackle or guard at this point.

It will be interesting to see how much run with the starters Hopkins gets this week.
