Cincinnati Bengals Player Preview: Mohamed Sanu

Trevor Ruszkowksi-USA TODAY Spor

As the Bengals tweak their offense this season under a new coordinator, will Mohamed Sanu have the opportunity to become a bigger weapon for the team?

Mohamed Sanu

Height: 6-2

Hometown: South Brunswick, NJ

Experience: 3

After catching 16 passes as a rookie, Sanu followed that performance up with 47 catches for 455 yards last season. Only two of those were for touchdowns. Not bad numbers for a guy that was picked in the third round of the NFL draft. The Bengals, and Bengals fans expect much more from the young receiver.

Last season we saw Sanu fall from the official number two receiver position to behind Marvin Jones. So what can the Bengals do with a guy that has number two receiver potential and a ton of athletic ability? It may be time to give opposing defenses some different looks with Sanu on the field.

Hue Jackson has some experience with getting guys into different positions on the football field. Marcel Reese was one of Jackson's experiments in Oakland. Reese, a tight end, was often split out and actually had more catches than carries when Jackson ran the team.

Sanu is no fullback, but it is conceivable to see the team experiment with him in some wildcat formations. We already know what kind of arm he has. With proper blocking schemes, he may be a decent runner when needed too. You are no longer going to catch the defense off guard after showcasing the arm in a touchdown to A.J. Green against the Redskins.

Any chance to get more playmakers on the field to keep the defense guessing is a good thing. Having Sanu on the offense with Marvin Jones and A.J. Green gives Dalton a lot of options. Add one of the Bengals top tight ends and the defense has a lot of good players to cover.

On top of that, they need to guess what kind of tricks the Bengals could have up their sleeves. A well timed trick play can be a difference maker in an NFL game and the Bengals have a guy in Sanu that gives them a lot of options.
