Monday NFL Rumors: Chad Johnson Bengals Reunion?

Kevin C. Cox

Sifting through the morning news I came across the news that Chad Johnson, of the Montreal Alouettes, was on the phone with Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson and Head Coach Marvin Lewis.

The Idea seems like a futile and desperate attempt for media attention, from one of the kings of media grubbing/attention hogging divas in football. His trash talking and in-game antics were one of the things I greatly enjoyed about the teams of the early 2000's. He would send the opposing secondary a message that he was going to make them "Kiss the Baby" and would often times back up those claims early in his career. His Touchdown dances graced my childhood.

He has one TD in the CFL

On the flip side of the coin, in Marvin Jones' absence the Bengals are left with a little bit of a depth problem. A.J. Green and Mohamed Sanu are obviously a good tandem and when Jones returns the receiving core is back to it's reliable fashion. But with both starting Tight Ends returning from injury that have plagued them for most of camp and only two reliable starting receivers in the stable does this phone call sound like that much of a reach?

I like Sanzenbacher, but he looked abysmal against a limping secondary in the Jets, and perhaps some of that could be chalked up to QB play. But against the second teamers, I thought Sanzenbacher would make a bigger difference Saturday night. Cobi Hamilton is starting look more and more like Brandon Tate, an AMAZING training camp player but doesn't transfer the skills to the game field from the practice field.

I don't feel comfortable starting Hamilton in the starting lineup in Baltimore, same goes for Tate and rookie receiver Wright. I'd feel comfortable and I hope Sanzenbacher can make a rebound this week in Arizona, but the reliability/consistency factor drops off heavily after Sanu. I don't necessarily think Chad Johnson would come in here and steal a spot from the 3rd or 4th guy, but he "SHOULD" have the talent to do so.

I don't think Lewis wants the media circus and locker room distraction that Johnson brings to the table. That being said, Lewis is a very loyal guy, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that this could happen. Would an agreement need to be reached between Lewis and Johnson on how much talk time he would have with the press etc?

Do you really think one guy could break what is looking more and more like a really close knit team? I don't think that's possible. I wouldn't be opposed to bringing in Johnson and trying him out for the last two preseason games. What is there to lose? A multitude of receivers are dinged up right now and we could use a veteran in that room. Brandon Tate is the oldest receiver, with 6 years in the league, and the next closest is Green with 4.
