The Indianapolis Colts made three cuts on Wednesday, the biggest of which being the departure of strong safety LaRon Landry.
In two seasons with the Colts, Landry played in 23 games (18 starts) with 123 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Landry was suspended for four games during the 2014 season (Weeks 5-8), and he didn't regain his full-time starting role until the end of the regular season. The 30-year-old notched 46 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 11 games (six starts) in 2014, and was slated to make $3.5 million in 2015
The Colts also cut offensive tackle Xavier Nixon and inside linebacker Andrew Jackson. Nixon, who has made a pair of starts in his two seasons with the Colts, missed the team plane prior to the AFC Championship game, which led to him being inactive for that game.
Jackson, a sixth-round pick in 2014, was used primarily on special teams last season. He had a DUI in June 2014 in Muncie, Indiana, and had another DUI last month in Kentucky.
Neither player is exactly a game-changer for whoever signs them next, but a team like the Bengals could sign one of them to fill out their offseason roster. Nixon would provide nice depth on the offensive line with Eric Winston and Clint Boling hitting free agency.
The same can be said for Jackson, who has more talent and upside while playing a position of need for Cincinnati. With Vontaze Burfict on the mend from microfracture surgery and Rey Maualuga hitting free agency, keep an eye on Jackson.
Over his final three seasons at Western Kentucky, Jackson notched 226 tackles, 43 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He fell to the sixth round because of character concerns, which ultimately cost him his job in Indy.
