With players now reporting for training camp, we're now just 47 days away from the Bengals are playing regular-season football.
That means it's time for a look back at former players who wore the No. 47 during their NFL careers in Cincinnati.
PLAYER | YEARS |
Charlie King | 1968-69 |
Greg Bright | 1980-81 |
Steve Maidlow | 1983-84 |
Corey Lynch | 2008 |
Marvin White | 2010 |
P.J. Dawson | 2015 |
Few Bengals have worn No. 47 during a regular-season game, but the crop promises to become larger this year.
The First
The first man to do it was defensive back Charlie King. Drafted by the Baltimore Colts in the 18th round (252nd overall) of the 1965 NFL Draft, King would make his pro debut in 1966 with the Buffalo Bills. He would play there for two years before singing with Cincinnati in 1968, where he would play in 23 games (0 starts) through two seasons.
The Best
While no Bengal has ever worn the No. 47 for more than two years in Cincinnati, Steve Maidlow made the most of his time in the Queen City. Drafted out of Michigan State in the fourth round (109th overall) of the 1983 draft, Maidlow would go on to play in 20 games (18 starts) through two years.
Currently
As for the current Bengals, P.J Dawson will don the No. 47 in his rookie season in hopes of making a significant impact on the defense this year. Drafted out of TCU in the third round (No. 99 overall), Dawson was an All-American linebacker with the Horned Frogs in 2014 while racking up 136 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and four interceptions on his way to being named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. He may very well earn a starting spot this year on a Bengals defense in need of more playmakers.
