Neat little NFL.com brief that features Bengals offensive line coach Paul Alexander and comparing being an NFL coach to a classical pianist.

2. Andy Dalton, Quarterback, Cincinnati Bengals. If yesterday was "rookie quarterbacks falling back to earth" day, Andy Dalton should probably get top billing over Cam Newton. Anytime you're outdueled by Alex Smith, it has not been a good day. Dalton finished 17-of-32 for 157 yards, with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. Bengals fans have just as much reason to be excited about their young quarterback as do Panthers fans, but days like yesterday are going to happen, too.

Sunday sucked because the atmosphere at PBS was as dismal as the product. When the place is full, you can sometimes forget there is no ambience. You can overlook the acres of blank concrete and the fields of plain green seats. You can gloss over the lousy music (at least they got rid of Sloopy, even if they replaced it with Sweet Caroline) and complete lack of respect shown Bengals glory. (Not quite an oxymoron, but close.) You can skip the fact there was no halftime entertainment. Not even the OSU band. But when the place is 2/3 full, you notice what a soulless facility it is. It has the personality of a BMV line.

Sunday registers as a significant step back for Bengals rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, who looked dismal for most of the day in a five-point loss at home to the 49ers. Dalton finished 17 of 32 for just 157 yards (40.8 passer rating), and threw two costly fourth-quarter interceptions to doom any chances of a Cincinnati comeback. The Bengals raised some hopes with the road win at Cleveland and the narrow loss at Denver. But they laid an egg in their home opener, and just over 43,000 fans showed up to witness the stinker. If you can't handle the 49ers on your own home field, there aren't many opponents you'll be expected to beat.

"Jerome Simpson resumed team activities Friday afternoon, and after evaluating his readiness, the coaching staff has determined he will be active for today's game. Jerome's legal situation with regard to events of the past week remains completely unresolved and the Bengals believe it is not appropriate to act on any presumption of what may transpire."

Bengals release statement about Jerome Simpson's active status for today's game against the 49ers.

"I feel great," said Smith, whose name surprisingly appeared Wednesday on the 49ers' injury report. "I went through all the protocol that the league and doctors require. I went through all the tests, and I'm cleared to play."
