An MRI on Friday that Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Geno Atkins tore the ACL in his right knee, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis confirmed during his presser.
Atkins knee had twisted in a pile during Lamar Miller's three-yard run with under five minutes remaining in the second quarter. After being attended to for several minutes, Atkins was helped off the field and then carted to the locker room from the sidelines.
Atkins will become the eighth player that Cincinnati will place on Injured Reserve this year, all of them on defense. Starting cornerback Leon Hall and hybrid defensive back Taylor Mays were placed on IR earlier this week.
With Devon Still recovering from an elbow injury that's kept him sidelines since week seven, the Bengals are expected to look at free agency to rebuild some of the team's interior depth. Based on the injury happening on Oct. 31 and observing recovery times for most players, along with his great work ethic, we expect Atkins to be ready by training camp next year. Either way, the year is over for him -- and some will argue for the Bengals as well.
