It seems too easy to pile on Al Davis and the Oakland Raider Asylum; that bit has done before, so we'll just skip it altogether.

Instead, the focus this week for the Bengals is preparing for the best thing the Raiders have going for them: their location.

Every week it seems Cincinnati is issued a new challenge to disprove the Same-Old-Bengals Theory. For Week 11, the challenge is to show they can travel to the West Coast and win.

In a sense, flying to Oakland is the practice-run for the San Diego game later this season. Instead of arriving on Friday like they normally do when heading West, Marvin Lewis has decided to fly out on Saturday to cut down on jet lag and squeeze in an extra day of practice. How effective that decision becomes will likely determine the team's itinerary for the Chargers game.

The game itself shouldn't be much of an issue for the Bengals. While maintaining a few good defenders, Oakland remains laughably dismal on offense, recently exemplified by the benching of former first overall pick, JeMarcus Russell, for the journeyman and third-stringed caliber, Bruce Gradkowski. Bengal fans will recall Gradkowski from when he played for Tampa Bay and beat Cincinnati in a nauseating game in 2006. That game could be the best of Bruce's career; nowadays he seems one step away from video-taping himself throwing footballs in a cornfield, like Uncle Rico.

Yet the Raiders can run the ball some and in close games, that attribute makes them scary, but I don't expect the game to be close. The Bengals stop the run better than they do anything else, which forces obvious throwing downs. Oakland would like to limit Gradkowski's throws to the bare minimum. They know on third-and-long situations, Mike Zimmer will bring the heat with the blitz, so I would expect them to try short throws to their talented tight end, Zach Miller, and screens to the solid running-back trio of Michael Bush, Justin Fargas, and especially Darren McFadden.

The Raider rookie receivers are lightning fast---Al Davis is unabashedly addicted to speed---but they drop lots of passes and are generally unimpressive. Our corners, perhaps the best tandem in the league, might need a little safety help on deep routes, but can take care of these youngsters on underneath routes and around the sidelines on their own.

It makes no sense to think the Raiders can do anything against a run-stopping, pass-rushing defense with excellent corners like Cincinnati's.

Still, I don't see a Bengals blowout this week as should be the case against such miserable opposition.

Oakland has good corners too. Nnamdi Asumugha is a top-5 corner and Chris Johnson has shown a lot of skill as well. The Bengals would prefer not to throw much anyway. A light workload for Carson Palmer this week (and the two weeks after that) can only be beneficial for the quarterback's long-term sustainability this season; I'd rather have him firing touchdowns for three weeks in January, as opposed to three weeks in November.

That means, without Cedric Benson, the other running backs will get a chance to carry the rock, including maybe the newest Bengal acquisition, Larry Johnson. The move to pick up LJ makes sense despite all of the obvious character concerns.

First of all, if you come to play for Marvin Lewis, you're there to work. This locker room will not tolerate any person not trying hard enough to win a Super Bowl. Johnson may be a big name, but he has little relevance to this team, and therefore must prove his worth by the effort he demonstrates in practice. Larry has looked lethargic the last few years and he's beginning to remind me of an aged Jamal Lewis on the field, however, he is a runner who can “carry the load” should Benson find himself further injured at any point this year.

Bernard Scott has exciting potential and his patient running style will serve him well in this league. Brian Leonard has proven himself as a talented third-down back and extra-effort guy. Yet neither is at their best if they have to carry the ball more than 15 times. Johnson can lift some of that burden by simply owning a fresh pair of legs, which are also vital to winning Playoff games in the snow.

Seeing LJ in stripes, railing against the Raiders like he's done so often before with Kansas City, would be an exciting development to an otherwise dull and lopsided affair in Oakland. Crazier things have happened and Any Given Sunday and yadda yadda yadda, but c'mon, it's the Raiders.

Bengals 20, Raiders 6

MK---the real Al Davis must be tied up inside a yacht somewhere near Costa Rica. The looney before us is an imposter hellbent on ruining an otherwise, really cool franchise. Too bad, Al. Too bad.

This has nothing to do with the Bengals. I apologize if that's a classless move in this sector of the internet universe.

In order to satisfy the word minimum to this post, I will go on record in saying that tomorrow I will post the Week 11 Preview which is intensely Bengals related. Therefore, this post might be more acceptable to those who take issue posting links to random blogs about beards. Thanks.

This is much closer to when I intended to get last week's thread up. Sorry again about the mistake. Anyway, here is the thread for week #8 of our Cincinnati Bengals player pick 'em contest. (We didn't start until week 3 – and then the BYE week screws it up even further – for those of you curious about the mismatched numbers.) To see the full write-up of the original rules see here. Last week's scoring results and a summary of the rules are repeated below the jump. Here are the current score standings:

1 (tie) – brandone – 78 pts
1 (tie) – FriarBob – 78 pts
2 – CincyMike56 – 67 pts
3 – Deisel2405 – 60 pts
4 – Vman in Germany – 54 pts
5 – ZJiff30 – 53 pts
6 – The Dealio – 44 pts
7 – Carsonorbust – 43 pts
8 – Mr. X – 39 pts
9 – Richard L – 30 pts
10 (tie) – jsl413 – 28 pts
10 (tie) – ritalin – 28 pts
11 – Bengals FTW – 21 pts
12 – Greener’s eyes – 20 pts
13 (tie) – IFChris – 19 pts
13 (tie) – featherman – 19 pts
14 – Kabash – 17 pts
15 – WHYUS!! – 16 pts
16 (tie) – JohnnyK – 15 pts
16 (tie) – indesignkat – 15 pts
17 Danimal – 13 pts

Last week nobody scored any points in this game, and I doubt a single one of us truly cared. We beat the Steelers. In their own house. I'm still half-giddy over it. Well OK, maybe not quite, but it was a great blast reading all those "concession speech" quotes from Steeler players in the AP recap article. We'll probably face them again in the playoffs, but hopefully we'll manage to pull it out for the three-peat.

Next up, the absolutely moribund Raiders. Are there words that can be repeated in polite company to properly describe just how awful these guys are? This is a game we should probably be favored by 14. Or maybe even 21. Just yuk. Then again, we have won quite a few games we were the underdog in, but so far we haven't managed to blow out an inferior and we need to do so to prove we really belong with the top teams. All things considered I think the Cardiac Cats were buried when the Texans exposed them, but just in case I wouldn't recommend anybody sell their pacemakers just yet. Every team in the NFL has talent and ability, and if they can actually come together and focus they could give us a real hard time. Especially if we treat them like we did the Browns a few weeks back.

Time to place your bets. Do you expect an offensive shootout? We've got plenty of WRs and RBs to pick for the scores here. Do you expect a defensive slug-fest? We've got some secondary players who can catch INTs and linemen who can force fumbles now, so maybe they are the way to go instead. Either way, pick your player to hang your hat on, and best of luck to all.

The scoring recap post from last week is repeated here as well:

Well this week will be a bit weird for us with this game. Only two players would have scored points for the people who picked them (Frostee Rucker x2 for his INT and Bernard Scott for his TD) but nobody picked them. JJoe did force a fumble, but it was recovered by Pittsburgh and is valueless to the standings. As a result, the standings are unchanged from last week.

On the other hand, our boys in black and orange beat the mustard and ketchup boys black and blue, and I that’s a heck of a lot better than the alternative. So enjoy your parties and happy dreams tonight folks, and hope our boys can light up the Raiders next week for some better fun and points in this game.

If you haven't played yet, here is a brief recap of the rules:

1) Pick one player (Make it easy on me, make him the title of your post. Both first and last name please.) who is NOT officially listed as a QB, P, or PK on the roster.
2) An offensive score is worth one point per participant who did not pick your player.
3) A defensive player is worth 3/2/1 point per participant who did not pick your player based on if he 3) actually scored, 2) gained possession of the ball for the team but didn't actually score, or 1) allowed the Bengals to gain possession by causing a fumble (or blocking a kick) that another Bengals player recovered. Sacks or tackles behind the line of and by themselves are not worth anything unless they are a strip-sack (1 point if we recover) or they are also a safety (3 points).
4) You score the maximum possible points for your player but only one time. So a defensive player who forces an opponent's fumble that Cincinnati recovers and recovers another opponent's fumble at a different point in the game is worth 2x points (not 3x cumulative).
5) Keep commentary to the bare minimum please.
6) Predictions on how they will score are not required, and if you provide one they don't net you any bonus if you are right nor do they detract if you are wrong (so long as they do actually score by game rules).
7) Try to be original yet still pick somebody you think has a realistic chance to score or cause a turnover.
8) Only ONE (1) player entry per contestant, per week is allowed.
9) Deadline for player entries each week is THIRTY (30) minutes prior to kickoff.

I do... seeing others pop in here (and some Bengals supporters as well) and question (deservedly) the character of Larry Johnson led me to google a bit on character in the NFL.

Ran across this database in San Diego, probably started after they had their Bengal year last year:

http://legacy.signonsandiego.com/sports/nfl/arrests.html

I didn't parse it entirely to see if every team was represented, but there are some real horses on there from many contenders. Then we get to also consider the non-arrestable character issues like having a baby and dumping the mama for a model (NE QB) or just being a douchebag (NO TE) or allowing your dangerous dogs to run free (eventually killing horses... HORSES?? MIA LB).

Any comments?

[I'm not sure of the propriety of copy-pasting data points from someone elses work, so I'll leave the link to you.

The Bengals’ next three games against the Raiders, Browns, and Lions are the Femme Fatale portion of the Bengals schedule. They’re the deceptively attractive females in action movies. I think this portion of the schedule could compare to the movie Species. In Species, you had this super hot woman played by Natasha Henstridge. All the characters think she’s hot, and one guy even gets seduced by her. The next thing he knows, she gets pregnant, and she devours him. How much does that suck? Not only does he inadvertently knock up some one-night stand chick, but she ends up being an alien and killing him. Of course, if you had to choose between Natasha Henstridge’s alien character vs. Rosie O’Donnell… well, you’d start writing your will and hope the death is quick (wait, which one did I choose? That could apply to either situation…)

Wait, what was I talking about? Oh yeah, the Oakland Raiders, et al., are the Natasha Henstridge of football. They look attractive… but then BAM! they get pregnant and eat you alive. Or just beat you in football… I’m losing my grip on reality, folks. Sorry. (What’s the lesson here? NEVER TRUST WOMEN (except for your mom and possibly the woman you married – especially if she’s a lawyer and can sue you for looking at her funny (I’m joking!!!)))

I am from Cincinnati and I live in Florida now, and let me tell you what winning does. It's a rush! Floridians love them some Gators and Crimson Tide. But, there are also alot of SAINTS fans here too. The support is overwhelming, and you see it everywhere. I am hoping the same goes for my beloved Bengals. If your a true Bengal fan then stand up!!!!!They finally look like the team of 88 by signing LJ. See many people don't remember that drive before Montana had the game winning drive. We had a chance to RUN the ball and milk the clock more instead of settling for a field goal. This day and age it's about running the football in January. We have seen the three and even four headed monster in Pittsburgh if you think back to all the backs they have used since Bettis (Parker got his shine off him, and now Mendenhall to him). They still find a way to win by running the football!!! So LJ is perfect. He will help get those grind yards if Benson is hurt or tired. We all know Kevin Faulk don't we? He should be ettched in everyone's mind. If you check where he is on the depth chart he is never the starter, but he always seems to make the big play (Addai the same for the colts when they had James) and so on and so forth. Even the Saints have that kinda of 3-4 headed monster at the rb position. NFL today is about different looks. Johnson and Benson in at the same time would cause headaches for a Def. Coordinator...play action baby! Which is the Bengals strongest suit. Ocho is playing well but he needs more big plays. Adding a guy like Johnson is what the Bengals need offensively to make defenses think twice about blitzing! Who Dey

At this point, you have to give the benefit of the doubt to Marvin and Mike Brown. The Bengals were criticized for picking up Benson, taking back Henry, signing Tank Johnson, keeping Chad, etc. I mean, come on already. The Bengals are 7-2 right now, and every one of those guys have been critical to that success. Not only that but when Tank went down for a few weeks, people were itching for him to come back and add to the depth chart. Not to mention how many people were upset with Henry going down. These were two guys that nobody wanted the Bengals to take. Now they sign Larry Johnson and its the same old story.

The guy was a former pro-bowler. He ran for 4.5 yards per carry last year on a terrible team, and he was dissatisfied with his team (as Chad was with ours for the last 2 years). He is coming to a whole new environment, a rejuvenated locker room, and he has yet to be included in any kind of game plan. If he acts up, which everyone should be hoping he does not, then he is gone, simple as that.

Until then, you have to give LJ the benefit of the doubt. He wants to win, we are winning. End of story. The coaching staff will not put up with his antics. Let him be a positive piece to the puzzle and give him your support.

If the rest of the team supports him, there is no reason why you should not.

There is a luxury suite on the top floor that overlooks the AFC North. It's shiny and comfortable and smells like the Playoffs. After milling about their new digs for a while, the Bengals put their feet up on the glass table, lean back and smile to themselves. This is the life.

Suddenly Marvin Lewis bursts into the room and banishes his team to the boiler room.

“We can come back when we win it,” he tells them as they file out and head to the basement.

In the parking lot below, Pittsburgh walks to its car holding a cardboard box, escorted by two NFL security guards. Behind them is Pittsburgh's secretary, Baltimore, also carrying a box but walking alone.

Most of the world still has a hard time accepting the facts: In the toughest division in football, Cincinnati has clubbed their way past Darth Raven and the Steeler Emperor twice each. This past week, experts everywhere declared that the Bengals were not ready to succeed on a big stage like the one at Pittsburgh. “They're not that good,” they said of the Bengals, yet all season long, no one has adequately answered why not.

We in Cincinnati have been shat upon for so long, that we crave a little recognition when something goes right. Yet in the face of the best Bengal season in a long time, very few believe in them. I admit it's frustrating but we can take solace in knowing that the Steeler Nation is still beside themselves with rage and disappointment. Eat crow, you vermin. And before you resort to that lame historical comeback regarding your Super Bowls remember this: no one is disputing you've been better in the past. All we're saying is that our team is better than yours this season. Today. Now. Go polish your trophies while you cry and lick your wounds. You can find us up here sitting on top and laughing at you if you want to give it another go in January.

The best part is that the Bengals don't care what any of us have to say; they have work to do. I get the feeling they aren't even enjoying their success. They're playing like they've been sentenced to hard labor until they win it all. No smiles. No relaxing; just pick axes and a half-mountain of concrete that still needs busted up.

They are a strong team. The offensive line is a group of angry elephants protecting their treasured quarterback and slamming d-lines out of running lanes for Mr. Benson and crew. The defense is a stubborn roadblock that forces opposing teams to turn around and go back where they came from. The backups on this team are as good as the starters, and everyone is held to the same standard.

They are also a smart team. We're witnessing perhaps the best collective coaching effort this franchise has enjoyed since the Paul Brown Era. The game plans are superior and unwavering, players appear totally prepared and demonstrate excellent technique when doing their job. The roster is made up of forgotten toys and castaways and isn't the most talented in the league, but the discipline and focus emphasized on the practice fields each week have this team in place for a first-round playoff bye.

Who cares if the world refuses to believe it? It's happening either way. Fans and media will continue to find reasons why the Bengals are unable to win it all, while Marvin and his staff will continue to disprove each stigma that resides in the minds of humans who know football. So go ahead and assume the Bengals can't; you'll be cleaning out your office next.

I'm from San Diego and the Chargers are my team but after Cincy's awsome performance against the pitts loosers I'm a new fan. Once again way to go Cincy and may you beat thoose rusted steel loosers 20 more times!!!!

I am the one who wrote the fan post - 10 reasons why the Steelers beat the Bengals last week.

In one of the comments I challeged one of your blog-members to come back and post his post game reaction to the what I at the time believed would be a blow out. He agreed and challenged me to do the same. I have not looked to see if it has happened, but wanted to come here and respect his challenge in the same manner I respect your team.

The Bengals handed the Steelers a tough loss at home. No excuses. Ben Roethlisbergers game looked like he couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. Skippy the punter showed again that he is afraid to tackle anything except a towel dispenser (although he did make one stop later in the game in a feeble attempt to redeem himself), and our running game fell apart behind an offensive line that was as offensive as they were at times during our last season.

Once again. No excuses. Good game. Well fought. I am choking on some big words right now and can only hope we get to have the chance to see you in the post season.

Good game and best of luck for the rest of the season.

So this morning Bengals fans were swimming in the euphoria of the win against the Steelers. But there was Shark Mike Brown lurking in the midst, waiting to reveal his diabolical plans to damper our excitement. Here’s how my morning went in the Ocean of Bengal Feel-Good Feelings with other fans (I used a thesaurus for that title):

Me: Who dey.
Random Fan #1: Man, that was a great game. I expected us to lose. I already made up a list of excuses about why we lost. It was a great game. (an actual comment)
Me: Yeah, a great game. (Thinking, this is the state of a typical Bengals fan: We’ve been losing for so long that we couldn’t possibly conceive of a way that we could win this game)
(Shark Mike Brown is swimming a few yards out)
Me: We’re going to the playoffs.
(Da-dum)
Random Fan #2: Our defense won us the game.
(Daaaa-dum)
Me: We out-Steelered the Steelers.
(Daaaaaa-dum)
Random Fan #3: We’re going to Miami in February. Super Bowl!
Dum
Dum
Dum
Dum
Dum
Ba-da-DAAAAAA!!! (Shark Mike Brown surges out of the water, in all his old, wrinkly, saggy, baldy glory)

Boy I hope not, but his name is being brought up around the league as a head coaching canidate. My opinion: he should be the Bengals head coach but that is just my opinion, but i doubt Marvin will go anywhere. Most of the Bengals success should be credited to Zimmer and his defense, not Marvin who I think makes alot of questionable coaching decisions. If Mikey Boy has any sense he will lock Zimmer up and make him the head coach or assistant head coach or something like that, because he is one of the best if not the best coach that has ever been on the Bengals sideline. Who Dey!!!

when you've never won a meaningful football game in franchise history? please enlighten me, i have seen this phrase / question looming around for a couple of years now and i continue to remain perplexed as to what the answer to this question is? with that being said, good luck not losing to San Diego and Minnesota and laying an egg somewhere else along the line and pissing away the division. or better yet, win the division outright and let us come back up to cincy and do you like we did you in 2005 on our way to #5.

Bengals vs Steelers coverage

I loved sitting at a local predominantly "Steeler's Bar" and rooting for my Bengals and laughing at the drunk and stunned steeler mill-hunks crying in their towels. They didn't know what hit them. They were certain their quarterback.........what's his name???...........was going to run onto the field in the last 2 minutes and drive them to a win. I laughed my ass off watching him throw 4 incompetions. He couldn't hit the side of a barn.

The only thing that worries me is that our asses were saved by some bad officiating calls that went our way, and that Polamolu only played on series in the game. That guy is a game changer, and that defense is totally different when he doesn't play. That''s what they get for relying so much on one player.

that we shouldn't get too big of heads and think we are indestructable now. We have a GREAT TEAM, but we still have six games to play and the one thing I don't want is to see the steelers in the post season, especially if they have Polamolu in the line-up. It concerns me that he didn't play in either game we beat them this year. We need to have a healthy respect for him. I think back to the '05 season when we were so sure we had 'em licked, and Pittsburgh just trounced us. We played a decent game yesterday, but remember we didn't get any offensive TDs. And the Steelers were clearly having an off day. We can beat them, but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. The next time, Rothlusburger may have a good day. Bengals vs Steelers coverage

I just wanted to put up a poll to see who favors this move. I don't personally think that it's a good idea, but then again I didn't think the Benson signing was a good move either and I turned out to be wrong on that one.

Pro's - Former pro-bowl running back. Discounted contract. Possibly a capable backup. He has to be on good behavior to stay in the NFL. Marvin Lewis suggested that at this point he will be a 4th string back. Bengals have a good track record of turning scrapped players into productive parts of the team.

Con's - Unproductive the last two years. He has a reputation for being a bad character guy. Might disrupt team chemistry. Have to cut somebody else (possibly Fui Vakapuna). Bernard Scott does not get a chance to prove himself as a backup RB. John Thorton suggested that Cincy would want to use him to spell Ced Benson as a #2 back, pushing Scott to a 3rd down role and leaving Leonard the odd man out.

I'll continue to add to the pros and cons list as you write out your opinions. Mostly I'm just interested in seeing how many people favor this signing versus how many don't.

This is Brandon Johnson's post-game quote. I got this from www.bengals.com :

BRANDON JOHNSON

On the significance of the victory:
Very sweet. Very sweet. I’m almost diabetic right now it’s so sweet. I’m so excited right now I can barely contain myself. It feels good. 5-and-0 in the division, I’ve never experienced anything like this. On to the next one. Bring on the Raiders.

I couldn't have said it better!!! After watching the bengals for 20 years now, this is probably the best moment i can remember outside winning the '05 1st place spot. defenses are what win superbowls! and with an offense like palmer, benson, and ocho (and pretty much everyone who has stepped on the field) they can score more than our defense will alllow 90% of the time. Brandon Johnson rocked it too! WOOOOOOO!!!! GO BENGALS!!!!!!
