David Pollack Injury

David Pollack Retires

A long time coming, Bengals outside linebacker, David Pollack has officially retired from football. I'm sure everyone remembers that play that ended his career a distant year-and-a-half ago and the silence waiting for him to pop back up. I'm sure that we're all comfortable his life will be just fine without pads. It's a shame too. He was going to be one hellva player. At least he has his wits about him and sound reasoning to move on.

Reports tell us that there's nothing new with Pollack... yet.

A quick David Pollack update.

There is no update. A decision nears though on whether he should return to football or not. Returning, most likely in a defensive end capacity, would give the Bengals one hellva rotation at defensive end. From Antwan Odom to Robert Geathers to one of the most celebrated defensive ends in SEC history.

But with each day that passes, you get the impression, even though reports are that he's medically cleared, that he'll hang them up for more spiritual purposes.

Pollack's Announcement has No Timetable

We can't understand what David Pollack is confronted with. Not many people have the opportunity to make life-changing choices -- a reset button of sorts. The announcement won't come indefinitely. But his decision to play or retire could be very soon.

In addition to seeing his surgeon, David Pollack will visit a doctor in California early this week before determining whether to attempt a comeback as an NFL player.

The former Bengals linebacker, who suffered a fractured C6 vertebra during a September 2006 game and has not played since, had told The Enquirer that an appointment Friday would be pivotal in his decision-making process.

There is no timetable for Pollack's announcement.

Pollack's D-Day Coming Soon.

I have a source close to the situation that it's entirely possible that David Pollack could either retire, play or sit another season -- sorry, that's a reference to Pro Football Talk. As it seems, Pollack's return seems more and more likely. His weight is back to football shape. He's working out with trainers. If he doesn't play again, he'll likely move back to his Georgia digs. Here's hoping that he makes the choice best for him -- which I'm sure he's pondering now.

Pollack's Surgery: No complications

David Pollack's recovery is one step closer...

Bengals linebacker David Pollack underwent surgery earlier today to address a fracture of the C6 vertebra and related damage.

Spine specialist Dr. Anthony Guanciale, who performed the procedure, said it went without complications, and that Pollack is resting comfortably. Pollack’s hospital stay is not expected to last more than a few days, the Bengals said in a release.

UPDATE: Pollack's Career "in doubt"

The future for David Pollack, as he says, depended on whether or not he required surgery. If he did, then his career was "likely" over.

Linebacker David Pollack of the Cincinnati Bengals needs surgery on the cracked bone in his neck and his playing career is now in doubt, the National Football League team said on Thursday.

Pollack cracked the bone in a game against the Cleveland Browns on Sept 17 while he was making a tackle. He was placed in a halo brace that immobilized his neck after the game.

Doctors said at the time that if the bone healed without needing surgery, Pollack would be able to resume his NFL career. The news that he needs surgery likely means he will not be able to play football again.

The team announced the news of the surgery after Thursday's practice, but did not make any forecasts as to whether or not Pollack would be able to resume his football career at some point. The surgery is expected in the next few weeks.

Pollack has Halo removed

Muddled with Reggie McNeal's goal to match Michael Irvin's resume, David Pollack finally had his Halo removed Thursday.

"The doctor said the fracture was healed, but the disc space wasn't what he liked it to be, so he wants to get an MRI and see how it looks," Pollack said from his suburban Cincinnati home.

If Pollack has to have surgery, his football career will be over. Even if he doesn't need surgery, his football future is still in jeopardy. It's something he's been coming to grips with all along, saying if doctors tell him he'll risk re-injury and perhaps paralysis by playing again, he won't.

Decision soon for David Pollack

The David Pollack situation is really a sad story. His rookie season was filled with frustration early, but ended with tons of promise. He held out during training camp and struggled to adapt from defensive end to outside linebacker. He finally got to start regularly late in 2005 and really started to shine. He started training camp this season with a hamstring injury and slowly recovered. Then as the season just started into the second game, he breaks his neck and now it's 50/50 on whether he'll play another down.

Right now she (his wife, Lindsey) has her hands full taking care of her husband. She helps bathe Pollack, she washes his hair, and twice a day she cleans the halo's pin sites. It's painful for him because she's separating his skin from the screws, keeping it from scabbing over.

ESPN showed the process last week during NFL Countdown.

David Pollack and his family will find out if he'll play football ever again on December 13th.

More on David Pollack: Fractured C-6 Vertebrae

The doctor released details about David Pollack's injury.

"The main thing is he does have a C-6 (vertebra) fracture," said Dr. Anthony Guanciale, director of orthopedic spine surgery at University of Cincinnati Hospital.

"His fracture was mild to moderate. His neurological status is normal. He has no spinal cord involvement or injury."

...

"The halo is the most stable brace because it allows no movement," Guanciale said. "How (the bone) heals and if it is stable are the big things. There will be a big evaluation in about nine months."

Also, Mark Curnutte confirmed the e-mail from David's wife was legit even though Marvin Lewis said point blank, "don't follow a rumor."

It's official: Pollack out for season, "neck injury"

Update [2006-9-18 18:6:13 by Kirkendall]:: Since no confirmation was made regarding Pollack's injury, other than it being a "neck injury", I think you should take the below letter as a grain of salt. Believe it. Or not. It's on Mark's blog; so I imagine it has some form of oversight being allowed to remain. But since no confirmation was made, I just advise you to be cautious on the information being distributed regarding Pollack's injury.

Mark Curnutte reports:

David Pollack will be placed on the injured reserve list, which ends his season as a player, after breaking his neck during the Bengals game Sunday.

The second-year linebacker suffered a severe neck trauma when he hit Browns running back Reuben Droughns in the shoulder pad with the top of his helmet early in the first quarter.

Pollack will be placed on Injured Reserve during the week.

Damn.

Update [2006-9-18 15:26:22 by Kirkendall]:: Let me emphasis that it was NOT confirmed as a broken neck by Marvin -- but if you know Marvin, you know what he says and what happens can be two completely different things. Also, Bengals starting center Rich Braham and strong safety, Dexter Jackson, are both out Sunday against the Steelers.

I truly hope that he can get back on the saddle; not for football, but for his own life and family. Get well David. Don't worry about the team; they'll rally around you now.
